THE WILD ROBOT
Release Date: 2024
Rating: PG
Running Time: 102 mins
An animated science fiction adventure based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Peter Brown, The Wild Robot hits all of the right notes with its 'pro- AI' storyline that tenderly tugs at your heart strings and completely mesmerises with its captivating animation style.
Roz, a service robot, is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must adapt to her surroundings. She eventually builds strong relationships with the local wildlife when she accidentally becomes mother to an orphaned goose; overriding her programming system and forming unnatural attachments and bonds, generally unseen in a robot.
This is a simple tale, but it is told so beautifully that you can't help getting swept up in the emotionally engaging story and perfectly fleshed out characters. The voice acting is exceptionally strong with Lupita Nyong'o voicing Roz, Pedro Pascal portraying the mischievous fox Fink and Kit Connor bringing the orphaned goose Brightbill to perfect fruition.
This is a movie for the whole family that everyone can get behind and thoroughly enjoy; The Wild Robot is a sheer delight to behold.
FINAL SAY: Sometimes to survive, you must become more than you were programmed to be.

LEO
Release Date: 2023
Rating: G
Running Time: 102 mins
An animated musical comedy directed by Robert Marianetti, Robert Smigel and David Wachtenheim and produced by Happy Madison Productions. This unexpectedly heart-warming and enjoyable children's film speaks volumes about a child's need for a reliable soundboard in their life and the power of a class pet.
Leo the lizard has been stuck in the same school and the same reptile enclosure with Squirtle the turtle for a very long time. So long that he has only just realised that his time may be up very soon. Determined to experience a full life, Leo sets out to explore the world at large and invertedly becomes a class guidance counsellor when he discovers that the children in the class can hear him when he speaks.
Leo is a really funny movie, I laughed out loud several times and since I work in a school myself, I thought that material was actually relatable and quite accurate. Adam Sandler and Bill Burr do a terrific job of voicing Leo and Squirtle and the entire movie delivers with a sweet charm that I highly recommend. Leo may well be the hidden gem of kids movies for 2023.
FINAL SAY: Enjoy not knowing everything. Enjoy being a kid.

SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE
Release Date: 2023
Rating: PG
Running Time: 140 mins
A sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse that somehow manages to be even better than the first offering and far more involved; Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse delivers on all fronts. Just when you think that you've seen everything that the multiverse could possibly offer, well it turns out you haven't!
After reuniting with Gwen Stacy when investigating a new threat named 'The Spot'; Miles Morales is catapulted across the multiverse and discovers that his existence is changing the fabric of the spider-verse and now he has more foes than he could have ever imagined.
The animation and styling of this film is just astounding; it not only looks incredible, but it sounds incredible as well with a fabulous soundtrack and an amazing cast of voice actors that includes Oscar Isaac, Daniel Kaluuya, Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Jason Schwartzman and Issa Rae to name but a few. This is an absolute delight to watch, showcasing just how creative, diverse and innovative graphic design and animation can be and how far we really can travel across the spider-verse. Keep your eye out for my two favourites Spider-Man India and Spider-Man Punk, so cool and so very funny.
Without a doubt, this is one of my favourite films to come out of 2023 and I cannot wait for the next exciting instalment.

GUILLERMO DEL TORO'S PINOCCHIO
Release Date: 2022
Rating: M
Running Time: 117 mins
A stop motion, musical and dark fantasy film from director Guillermo del Toro that is loosely based on the 1883 Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi and strongly influenced by Gris Grimly's illustrations for a 2022 edition of the book. Guillermo del Toro called this film his 'passion project' stating that "No art form has influenced my life and my work more than animation and no single character in history has had as deep of a personal connection to me as Pinocchio." And after 15 years in the making, Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is astoundingly great in every respect; a film not just for children but very much for adults as well.
Set in fascist Italy during the interwar period and World War II, a carpenter named Geppetto tragically loses his son Carlo after an air-raid on their small village. Grieving, the drunken father chops down a pine tree that is home to a cricket named Sebastian J. Cricket, who becomes the narrator of the tale. In a drunken stupor Geppetto creates a rough wooden boy-like puppet from the felled pine tree and after some magic from a Wood Sprite, the puppet springs to life. And so the tale of Pinocchio begins, a puppet who has to learn about loyalty, expectation and love in a mostly cold and judgemental world.
The voice casting is simply perfect with Ewan McGregor, David Bradley, Tilda Swinton, Ron Perlman, Cate Blanchett and Christoph Waltz all shining here. However, it is the puppets themselves that steal the show here because the stop motion animation and meticulous attention to detail with the puppets and sets is nothing short of incredible. The detail is just mind blowing and the storyline itself is darling in every way possible.
Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is unlike anything that I have ever seen before in respect to craftsmanship and detail; this film is an unmissable treat both for the eyes and the heart, and it is easily my favourite movie of 2022.
FINAL SAY: You did bring me joy. Terrible, terrible joy.

THE BOY, THE MOLE, THE FOX AND THE HORSE
Release Date: 2022
Rating: G
Running Time: 34 mins
A short, animated adventure that is based on the illustrated book of the same name by Charlie Mackesy, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse delivers an emotional and poignant tale about self discovery and the meaning of life. Released by Apple+ streaming, this Academy Award winning short has a strong message that is most definitely not exclusively designed for children.
Four unlikely friends, a lost boy, a mole, a fox and a horse share their story's and experiences and become tightly bonded as they try to find the lost boy's home.
Author Mackesy explained that the four characters in this tale actually represent different aspects of the same person. The inquisitive and curious boy, the enthusiastic but greedy mole, the weary 'beaten down by life' fox and the wise and sagacious horse. All that I know for sure is that in 34 mins I had cried, I had smiled and I also walked away feeling like I had a genuinely spiritual experience, and for that reason, I believe this film to be an unmissable watch.
FINAL SAY: Life is difficult, but you are loved.

THE SEA BEAST
Release Date: 2022
Rating: PG
Running Time: 115 mins
A computer animated adventure film directed by Chris Williams, who co-wrote the screenplay with Neil Benjamin. The Sea Beast premiered on Netflix and became an immediate hit with adults and children alike due it's charming and diverse characters and positive storyline.
For hundreds of years sea monsters have been hunted by mankind. When a young girl stows away on a legendary monster hunting ship she is simply hoping for an adventure. However, she soon becomes caught up in the hunt for a massive and elusive sea monster called Red with absolutely unpredictable outcomes.
Well, I say unpredictable, but the storyline here is actually quite predictable. However, with that being said, the film more than makes up for its predictability with its terrific characters that are perfectly voiced by an array of great actors including Karl Urban, Jared Harris, Dan Stevens and Marianne Jean-Baptiste.
The Sea Beast also boasts an engaging fast pace and loads of colourful, high-spirited, action and adventure. And there are plenty of fabulous monsters and buccaneers to delight audiences of all ages. With a heartfelt plotline, there's a lot to like about this high sea adventure tale.
FINAL SAY: I'm afraid anything that I say will upset you.

RON'S GONE WRONG
Release Date: 2021
Rating: PG -13
Running Time: 107 mins
A computer animated, science fiction/ comedy film directed by Sarah Smith and Jean- Phillipe Vine. This is the first animation feature film from Locksmith Animation and TSG Entertainment; and a mighty fine effort in my opinion.
A tech giant known as 'Bubble' has created the B-Bot. A robot companion that is designed to help children to make friends. Pretty soon everyone has one, except for Barney, a struggling social outcast who is desperate to fit in. Barney believes that everything is finally going to change for him when he gets a B-Bot for his 12th birthday. However, unbeknownst to him, his B-bot called Ron has been damaged, making it unlike any of the other bots on the market.
This is some seriously funny material, I was laughing out loud a lot of the time. The voice actors, who delivered their material remotely due to the Covid-19 pandemic are all genuinely terrific, especially Zac Galifianakis who brilliantly voices Ron and pretty much steals the entire show. However strong performances must also be acknowledged from Jack Dylan Grazer, Ed Helms and Olivia Colman.
Aside from all of the humour, there is also a super strong message here about friendship, acceptance, understanding and the gross misuse of social media platforms by young people today that I think that many children would benefit from hearing.
Overall, Ron's Gone Wrong is a hidden gem that you may have overlook amidst the giants of 2021, but it is definitely worthy of your time.

ENCANTO
Release Date: 2021
Rating: PG - 13
Running Time: 99 mins
A musical, computer animated feature film from Walt Disney Animation Studios that delivers another magical and culturally aware tale that will entertain crowds of all ages. With a musical line up from Hamilton's renown Lin Manuel Miranda and more colourful delight than a gumball machine, Encanto left me in very high spirits indeed.
The magical Madrigal household has delivered gifts and magical support to their family for decades. An enchanted candle sits at the centre of all of the magic and is kept safe by the family's matriarch Alma. Mirabel, the only Madrigal to never be bestowed with a magical gift, has a vision that the house is going to lose it's magic and in turn she sets about a chain events that will change all of their lives forever.
I particularly enjoyed the message being conveyed here about the power of being yourself and being accepted for who you are. I also really enjoyed the focus on community and family, forgiveness and understanding and I especially appreciated that no-one was actually playing the villain or bad-guy either, which is always refreshing to see in children's cinema. The women were all very empowered and the tasteful cultural nods were excellent.
Overall, I had a lot of fun watching this film and I can see it becoming a family favourite for generations.

CRUELLA
Release Date: 2021
Rating: PG - 13
Running Time: 134 mins
If you have ever wondered how Cruella De Vil became the evil tyrant that we all know her as today, then this is the movie for you. In what can really only be described as a Disney origin tale, Cruella delivers an enjoyable romp into the ultra bitchy world of fashion design and showcases some of the most iconic clothing and music choices of the '60s and '70s punk rock scene in London at that time.
Long before she'd ever thought of skinning and wearing dogs, Cruella De Vil was a genius rebel child called Estella. Estella was a lovable misfit who found herself orphaned because of three Dalmatians and a well dressed bitch with a dog whistle. Fast forward a decade and Estella just wants to be a fashion designer and finds her opportunity in a most surprising place.
Directed by Craig Gillespie, the film although long, does travel at breakneck speed with lots happening all of the time. Ultimately, it's a revenge tale with Emma Stone and Emma Thompson duking it out with great style and flair in the fashion arena; attempting to out dress and outwit each other at every turn and they are both genuinely terrific in their roles.
I actually had a lot of fun watching this film. It's got a very cool punk rock vibe that will appeal to both pre and post teenage girls (as well as every girl in between) and it cannot be denied that the costuming alone is worth tuning in for.
Go in with an open mind and just have fun with it.

THE MITCHELLS VS THE MACHINES
Release Date: 2021
Rating: PG
Running Time: 113 mins
Are you looking for an animated family movie that has both comedy and science fiction? Well, look no further because The Mitchells vs the Machines has both of those things in buckets as well as a huge ensemble voice cast, some really quirky animation techniques and a truly interesting storyline.
A dysfunctional and unique family head out on a final 'hoo-rah' road trip together to drop their eldest child off at college. Unfortunately their plans are interrupted by a hostile robot uprising that threatens all life on Earth.
This film is both funny and fun and delivers two terrifically interesting storyline plots simultaneously. On one hand this is a tale about redefining the meaning of family and on the other hand it's a story about an evil robot uprising. Both storylines are great and the whole experience is enhanced by the colourful and fast paced animations and the incredible voice cast that boasts the likes of Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Eric Andre, Conan O'Brien and Olivia Coleman.
Steaming on Netflix, The Mitchells vs the Machines is a must see for the whole family.

SOUL
Release Date: 2020
Rating: PG
Running Time: 100 mins
A computer animated fantasy film produced by Pixar Animations and released by Walt Disney Pictures. Soul is easily the best children's film and definitely one of the best movies to come out of 2020. With a concept that could be considered too adult for children to fully comprehend, Soul skilfully weaves a tale about mindfulness and living your best life that in my opinion, won't be lost on audiences of any age.
Middle school music teacher Joe Gardner has always aspired to become a successful jazz musician. That dream seems like it is about to become a reality when Joe lands the chance to play with jazz legend Dorothea Williams. However, when Joe takes a tumble down a manhole and arrives in the afterlife, his dreams of becoming a jazz star look highly unlikely.
Visually magnificent, musically enchanting and filled with otherworldly delights, Soul is a pleasure to watch whilst still delivering a beautiful and thoughtful message about the way in which we engage in our everyday lives. This film has a high vibration to it that is absolutely intoxicating and I adored it.
Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Graham Norton, Rachel House and Richard Ayoade deliver incredible voice acting to their characters and the entire experience is nothing short of enchanting. Soul is unmissable viewing for all ages.
FINAL SAY: Life is full of possibilities. You just need to know where to look. Don't miss out on the joys of life.

THE WILLOUGHBYS
Release Date: 2020
Rating: PG
Running Time: 92 mins
A computer-animated film directed by Kris Pearn and co-directed by Rob Lodermeier, that was based on the book of the same name by Lois Lowry. The Willoughbys delivers an enjoyable romp into the silly and extremely dysfunctional world of the Willoughby family.
The Willoughbys were once a proud and adventurous family, but that was long ago. The current Willoughby monarchs are self indulgent twits who neglect and mistreat their own children. However, the four Willoughby children are very resourceful and they hatch a plan to rid themselves of their dreadful parents forever.
This is a truly whimsical tale that although mainly silly, still has a genuinely heartfelt message about family loyalty and acceptance. As I watched, I couldn't help thinking about how much Roald Dahl would have really loved this movie with it's ingenious children and dastardly parents, there is definitely a touch of Dahl humour in here.
Ricky Gervais adds levity as the narrator (who is also the family cat - get over it!) and Will Forte, Maya Rudolph, Terry Crews, Jane Krakowski and Martin Short bring loads of oddball charm to their unusual characters with their strong voice acting skills.
Sure it's a bit all over the shop and for the most part the crazy is set to high, but that's all part of this movie's charm, so just sit back and go with it, it's a pretty fun ride.
FINAL SAY: What's in the box? And can we empty it so I can sit in it?

ONWARD
Release Date: 2020
Rating: PG
Running Time: 102 mins
Disney and Pixar team up again to deliver a unique, urban, fantasy animation that will appeal to audiences of all ages. Directed by Dan Scanlon who also wrote the screenplay, and featuring strong voice performances from well known stars like Chris Pratt, Tom Holland, Octavia Spencer and Julia Louis- Dreyfus, Onward delivers all of the laughs and heartfelt sentiment that we have come to love and expect from great Pixar movies.
In a world filled with mythical creatures and yet sadly devoid of all magic, two teenage elf brothers set out on a quest to find a magical artifact that will bring back their deceased father. With only a magical staff, some basic magic knowledge and a beat up Chevy van named Vanicorn, the brothers attempt to navigate their way through various tasks and trials that ultimately puts their own relationship with each other to the test.
Due to the 2019/2020 Coronavirus Pandemic, Onward had an extremely short and limited release time in cinemas and was consequently only seen by many people on the small screen. However, this did not greatly diminish the effective of this touching and also amusing tale that in my opinion, seems destined to become an animation cult classic.
FINAL SAY: Put it in O, for onward!

KLAUS
Release Date: 2019
Rating: G
Running Time: 97 mins
Distributed by Netflix, this Spanish animated Christmas movie is a winner. Generally, I find Christmas movies extremely contrived and exceptionally cheesy, so you can imagine my surprise (and delight) when Klaus turned out to be a heart-warming and beautifully animated Yuletide viewing choice.
Jesper is an entitled, lazy and unambitious young man, which is why his father sends to the distant island of Smeerensburg to fulfil the role of local postmaster. Jesper must post 6,000 letters within twelve months or else he will be cut off from his wealthy family estate. However, Smeerensburg is a town at war and no-one (not even the children) are writing letters, which means that Jesper has to get very creative in order to complete his task.
This is a deeply imaginative, original and interesting take on the 'Santa Claus' tale. The voice casting is incredible; with heavyweights like Jason Schwartzman, Joan Cusack, Rashida Jones, J.K. Simmons and Norm MacDonald all delivering perfectly. And the animation! It is simply exquisite, Klaus is so visually pleasing and looks so fresh and original, I just loved it! Klaus is an excellent Christmas Eve viewing choice for the entire family.
FINAL SAY: A true selfless act always sparks another.

TOY STORY 4
Release Date: 2019
Rating: G
Running Time: 100 mins
This fourth installment in the Pixar Toy Story series and sequel to 2010's Toy Story 3, is yet another Disney/Pixar success. Heartwarming, witty and exceptionally animated, this tale brings more lovable toy characters to life and also delivers some bittersweet farewells for some of our favourite Toy Story characters as well.
Things are changing for the Toy Story gang all over again. Bonnie is heading off to kindergarten and she doesn't seem as interested in Woody as Andy was. However, with Bonnie's best interests at heart Woody still endeavours to keep her happy by caring for her newest toy, a plastic fork creation that she made at kinder called Forky. Trouble is, Forky keeps trying to throw himself away and doesn't understand his value or importance as Bonnie's newest favourite toy.
The animation here is straight up stunning, absolutely gobsmackingly great, and the voice acting is on point in every regard. In particular I really enjoyed Tony Hale as Forky, Keanu Reeves as Duke Caboom and Christina Hendricks as Gabby Gabby and I really felt that these new characters brought a lot of fun and excitement to this new adventure.
For fans of the original trilogy, you are in for a treat because this truly is a nostalgic track down memory lane with Woody, Buzz and the gang that will have you singing along to "You Got a Friend in Me" and smiling when your old favourites arrive back on screen again, it's totally timeless and completely bewitching.

ALADDIN
Release Date: 2019
Rating: G
Running Time: 128 Mins
This live-action musical fantasy directed by Guy Ritchie and based on Disney's 1992 animation of the same name, was surprisingly better than I had anticipated that it was going to be. The film still follows the original Middle-Eastern folktale from the One Thousand and One Nights, but there is something fresh and fun going here. I don't know if it was the Bollywood vibe, Guy Ritchie's unique style of direction, the creative use of characters or all of the above, but this is definitely another Disney success in my mind.
Aladdin, a street urchin (or as he is referred to in the story - street rat) falls in love with the beautiful, but clearly out of his league, Princess Jasmine. He comes into contact with a magic lamp that houses a magical Genie that offers Aladdin three wishes and a chance to change his station in life. However, Aladdin is not the only one that knows about the power of the lamp, and the conniving Royal Vizier Jafar has sinister ideas of his own to put into play.
The costumes and sets in this film are so inspired and gorgeous, they make the whole film feel lush. Will Smith, who had enormous shoes to fill following Robin Williams' epic efforts on the animated version, just shines as the Genie and delivers perfectly with lots of charisma and genuine flare. Mena Massoud is a very likeable Aladdin and Naomi Scott is simply stunning as Princess Jasmine. I really wasn't expecting to like this, but I really did and dare I say that I liked it far more than the original animated version as well.

SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE
Release Date: 2018
Rating: PG
Running Time: 117 mins
A computer- animated superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Miles Morales/ Spiderman, and the first animated feature film in the Spider-man franchise. And what an incredible success it turned out to be! Critically acclaimed for it's animation, characters, storyline, voice acting, humour and soundtrack, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won numerous awards including Best Animated Feature at the 91st Academy Awards, 46th Annie Awards and 76th Golden Globes. It was the first non-Disney or Pixar film to win the Academy Award for Best Animation since 2011, and after seeing it for myself I agree that it is a visual masterpiece and true feast for the senses.
In true Spiderman style, Miles Morales gets bitten by a radioactive spider and starts to transform into a spider-man. However, when the original Spiderman Peter Parker turns up from an alternate dimension, closely followed by other spider-people, it become apparent that they will need to join forces to defeat a foe that poses a threat across all of their universes.
This is quite a complex film for children to grasp with all of it's multi-dimensional concepts, however it is so bright, fast moving and visually pleasing that I think that most children would just go with it anyway. The voice actors are fantastic and the script is sharp and entertaining, it's hard to not get swept up in the energy and excitement of it all, it's a really beautifully executed animation that deserved all of the acclaim that surrounded it.
FINAL SAY: It always fits. Eventually.

ISLE OF DOGS
Release Date: 2018
Rating: PG
Running Time: 101 mins
Wes Anderson does it again! Another brilliant, fun and completely original offering from the 'King of Quirk' that is destined to generate a cult following and amuse audiences with its cheeky humour and delightful stop motion animation style.
After an outbreak of canine flu, all of the dogs have been expelled from Megasaki City, Japan and quarantined to a nearby dump called Trash Island. An inventive 12 year old boy named Atari arrives on the island to search for his lost and beloved pet Spots. He is met by a riff-raff bunch of exiled dogs that help him on his quest, which also inspires a group of dog lovers back on the mainland to expose a government conspiracy.
Like all Anderson movies, there is never a shortage of terrific actors involved and some of the more recognisable voice offerings have been provided by Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson, Harvey Keitel, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand, Greta Gerwig and even Yoko Ono.
Isle of Dogs is so beautifully realised, tastefully delivered, imaginatively created and painstakingly executed that I couldn't help but adore it from beginning to end, it's an unmissable viewing!

COCO
Release Date: 2017
Rating: G
Running Time: 109 mins
It seems that the Pixar/ Disney combo cannot put a foot wrong lately and Coco is another fine example of their terrific storytelling abilities and perfectly honed animation skills. Wisely released in Mexico the weekend before Dia de Los Muertos, Coco swiftly became the highest grossing film in Mexico and since then it has continued to receive worldwide praise and award accolades.
12 year old Miguel's family owns a shoemaking business that has been passed down through the generations. Ever since grandma Coco's father abandoned her and her mother to pursue a musical career, the family have had a strict no music policy and an expectation that all generations will make shoes. However, secretly budding musician Miguel is desperate to enter the local Day of the Dead talent show and is willing to go against his family's wishes to do so, even is it means stealing a guitar from his musical hero Ernesto's mausoleum. By stealing from the dead, Miguel discovers that he has placed a curse upon himself which must be broken by sunrise to be undone.
This is a heart warming family tale about remembering those that we have lost and treasuring our memories of them. I am a huge sucker for all things Mexican, especially anything to with Dias de Los Muertos, so I just adored this movie and thought that it was a moving and passionate tribute to Mexican culture and their incredible family bonds, both here and in the afterlife.

WONDER
Release Date: 2017
Rating: PG
Running Time: 113 mins
A heartwarming tale directed by Stephen Chbosky and based on the novel of the same name by R. J. Palacio. This is a movie that every child needs to see at least once because of its huge and valuable message about acceptance and support. By gently tugging at our heart strings, Wonder delivers an important message about tolerance, persistence and love through the eyes of not only the main protagonist, but also through the voices of those around him.
Auggie Pullman has Treacher Collins Syndrome which causes him to have facial deformities. He often wears an astronaut's helmet to combat stares from the outside world and he is about to leave the safety of his nurturing family environment to attend middle school for the very first time.
You would have to have a heart made of stone to not get something out of this movie. It is terrifically cast, with Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and new comer Izabela Vidovic who plays Auggies older sister Via, bringing a great deal of talent to the fold. Jacob Tremblay also does a great job of playing Auggie, the often troubled and traumatized child at the centre of the story and he manages to convey a convincing range of emotions for the duration.
Expect to feel something, have your tissues at the ready.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
Release Date: 2017
Rating: G
Running Time: 139 mins
I was never much of a fan of the Beauty and the Beast animation, the idea of a smart and well read woman suffering from Stockholm Syndrome never really captured my heart. However, that being said, this is an undeniably beautiful realisation of the Disney classic, which has been brought to life with tremendous attention to detail, costuming and character, and the overall experience is undeniably enjoyable.
Independent and intelligent beauty Belle (Emma Watson) is taken prisoner by an enchanted beast (Dan Stevens) in his castle. The entire grounds and staff of the beast's castle are also enchanted and will remain so if the beast does not find true love and break the spell.
Yes, as Shrek would say, he had a curse upon him of a fierce kind. Hardly a revelation in storytelling to be honest, but the set designs, the costumes, the music and the casting are totally on point and for that reason I do recommend a viewing.

MOANA
Release Date: 2016
Rating: PG
Running Time: 113 mins
A sweeping CG animated adventure from Disney that boldly goes where no other Disney Princess movie has ever gone before by leaving out the love interest and giving the heroine total control over her own destiny. Yes, that's right, no prince character to be seen anywhere and a good dash of feminism that doesn't feel forced or heavy handed at all.
A daring teenager named Moana is chosen by her ancestors and the sea to engage in a quest that will save the many islands of Oceania from wasting away. She must enlist the help of the mighty demigod Maui in order to fulfil her mission, but this demigod is not easy to wrangle.
I was completely swept up in the exciting adventure and pace of this movie. The animation is incredible, the voice actors are perfectly cast, the soundtrack is fantastic and the character of Moana couldn't be more adorable. Disney have hit a bullseye here, Moana is right on the mark and very forward thinking. I far preferred this to Frozen, which I found intensely over-rated, and I was so relieved to see that the Disney Princess genre had fully redeemed itself in such a pleasant way.

THE LITTLE PRINCE
Release Date: 2016
Rating: PG
Running Time: 108 mins
Thank you Netflix for this hidden gem. This wonderfully realised stop-motion/ animated fantasy was directed by Mark Osborne and based on the 1943 novel of the same name by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Premiering at the 68th Cannes Film Festival in 2015, the film mysteriously went out of circulation, and then over a year later, Netflix acquired the distribution rights and voila, we finally got to enjoy it.
An intelligent and studious little girl and her meticulous mother move to a new location to ensure that they are correctly zoned for a prestigious private school. Their new neighbour, The Aviator, proves to be a curious and eccentric character and soon befriends the little girl. Meeting in secret, the two unlock the girl's imagination and sense of adventure through The Aviator's tales about The Little Prince.
Heavyweights like Jeff Bridges, Rachel McAdams, Marion Cotillard, James Franco, Benicio Del Toro and Ricky Gervais have perfectly voiced many of the main characters, but it is the brilliant and whimsical animation style that really sweeps you up here. This is such a touching and lovely movie, and certainly one that shouldn't be missed.

The stop motion animation is just dazzling and the heart felt story line is touching without being sappy.
Young Kubo must find three magical pieces of armor to stand any chance of defeating the evil Moon King, Raiden. With the help of a grumpy monkey and a beetle that has no memory recall, he must conquer his fears, uncover the much needed power items and also discover the truth about how things came to be the way that they are.
Like all good adventure tales, there are three main tasks to be conquered before the final showdown can begin, and here they play out to perfection. Strong voice performances are delivered by Charlize Theron, Matthew McConaughey, Ralph Fiennes, Rooney Mara, George Takei and Art Parkinson as Kubo.
This is the type of story telling that I long for in children's cinema; filled to the brim with fantasy, over flowing with self discovery and the overall visual experience is second to none. This is a wondrously executed piece, and an absolute must see cinematic experience, don't miss this gem.
FINAL SAY: If you must blink, do it now.

THE JUNGLE BOOK
Release Date: 2016
Rating: PG
Running Time: 106 mins
Here is a version of Rudyard Kipling's classic tale about the adventures of Mowgli the Mancub that even he would've loved. This visually stunning, live action CGI was directed by Jon Favreau and produced by Walt Disney Pictures, who also produced the 1967 animated film of the same name, which is quite frankly left in the dust in the wake of this beautifully realized and captivating version.
An orphaned human child named Mowgli has been raised in the wild by a wolf pack and a panther mentor. When he attracts the unwanted attentions of the ferocious tiger Shere Khan, he is sent away by his animal guardians to the safety of the nearest man village, but Mowgli does not want to leave the jungle or his animal family.
Simply put, the animals are just 'out of this world' amazing in this film, I have not seen anything that comes close to this yet in terms of computer generated wildlife. I was completely spellbound, and spent half of the movie kicking myself that I hadn't gone to see it on the big screen. The animals have been perfectly voiced by Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, Scarlett Johansson and Christopher Walken, but my favourite by a long mile was Bill Murray's marvelous portrayal of Baloo, the chilled out, honey craving bear that befriends Mowgli.
This is high quality, engrossing, intelligent family entertainment, that should not be missed.
FINAL SAY: For the strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack.

ZOOTOPIA
Release Date: 2016
Rating: PG
Running Time: 108 mins
I am always pleased when a movie that has been designed for children turns out to not only be imaginative and interesting, but also sensitive and intelligent; and Disney's latest offering Zootopia is a fantastic example of that. This film boldly tackles the topical and relevant themes of prejudice and stereotyping within a kid friendly and visually pleasing 'mammalian metropolis' that is undeniably fun and fresh to watch.
In a world populated by anthropomorphic mammals, rookie rabbit police officer Judy Hopps, must enlist the help of Nick Wilde, a street wise hustling fox, to help her crack a case that will save her career. This case however, is unlike any other that has been seen in Zootopia; threatening the harmonious fabric of their society as stereotypes and assumptions about certain species leads to mass hysteria.
The relationship between the rabbit and fox characters is just plain darling, I adored the animated onscreen chemistry that was portrayed here, and Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman were perfect choices for the key voice actors.
Zootopia is thoughtfully put together and highly entertaining from start to end. Bravo Disney, the world needs more of this type of smart and interesting children's cinema, keep it coming!

THE BOY AND THE BEAST
Release Date: 2016

Running Time: 119 mins
A Japanese animated adventure film, written and directed by award winning director Mamoru Hosoda, that won Animation of the Year at the 37th Japan Academy Prizes. The Boy and the Beast also captivated audiences around the world with its unique animation style and creative storytelling.
A troubled nine year old boy stumbles upon an alternate world that is filled with fantastic beasts. A powerful and gruff beast warrior named Kumatetsu, who has been searching for an apprentice, takes the boy on and attempts to train him in the ways of the warrior.
This is a thoughtfully put together coming of age tale that has plenty of interesting and colourful characters, and enough complications to keep interest levels high. The animation styling here is so good, I loved the overall tone and effect of this film, it was such a pleasing visual undertaking. The Boy and the Beast is certainly one of the hidden gems of 2016 and is definitely a family movie worthy of your time.

INSIDE OUT
Release Date: 2015
Rating: PG
Running Time: 94 mins
A computer-animated comedy-drama produced by Pixar and released by Disney, that is set within the mind of an eleven year old girl. Director and co-writer Pete Docter first developed the idea for the script when he began to notice changes in his own daughter's personality as she grew up, and what he has come up with is one of the smartest, sweetest and refreshingly original children's films that I have ever seen.
Young Riley's head is filled with emotions, literally. These five emotions form the characters of Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger and Disgust and they are all stationed at "headquarters" which is really Riley's conscious mind. When Riley's family packs up and moves to San Francisco, her emotions are truly put to the test.
This is some seriously clever children's cinema; entertaining, visually delightful and intelligently imaginative. We watched this as a family and everyone unanimously agreed that it was wonderful, touching and hilarious. Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Lewis Black, Mindy Kaling and Phyllis Smith do a terrific job of voicing Riley's emotions, making this the best movie to explore children's emotions so far.
FINAL SAY: All these facts and opinions look the same to me, I can't tell them apart.
4.5 Chilli Peppers
Note: Inside Out 2 arrived in 2024, bringing with it an older 'pubescent' Riley and her four new emotions Anxiety, Embarrassment, Envy and Ennui. The laughs and the storytelling are delivered consistently in this second offering and although I didn't think that it was quite as strong as it's incredible predecessor, it was definitely a 3.5 Chilli Pepper offering and a mighty fine sequel.

THE LEGO MOVIE
Release Date: 2014
Rating: PG
Running Time: 100 mins
Wow! Seriously, just wow! Who knew that advertising a product could be so funny and clever? This 3D full length stop-motion Lego movie is amazing! All I wanted to do after I watched it was build something with Lego, it is just so creative and inspiring. I can only imagine what this film did for the already massive Lego industry in sales following the film, but it is deserving because this film is not just inspiring, it is highly entertaining as well.
Emmet Brickowski is just an ordinary construction Lego figure until he is identified as the most "extraordinary person." Emmet joins forces with an eclectic team of characters to fulfill his role and save the Lego Universe from the evil Lord Business.
Every man and his dog has gotten together to voice the characters in this movie, and it is a star studded offering on an epic scale. Will Arnett as Batman and Morgan Freeman as Vitruvius stole the show for me, but whatever your tastes, child or adult, you are going to enjoy this movie. There is a lot of adult directed humour hidden beneath its kiddy exterior, so don't be fooled into thinking that it is just for the wee ones. Lego lovers of all ages rejoice!
FINAL SAY: Everything is awesome!

Note: The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, released in 2019, is a very complimentary sequel to the original that is sure to amuse and please fans of the first instalment. Not quite as strong as its predecessor but still a solid 3 Chilli Pepper viewing.

PADDINGTON 1 AND 2
Release Dates: 2014 and 2017
Rating: G
Running Times: 95 mins and 104 mins
A live-action animated fantasy/comedy written and directed by Paul King and based on the stories of Paddington Bear that were originally created by Michael Bond. These movies are actually quite adorable and very impressive, with a cast that boasts the likes of Ben Whishaw (Paddington's voice), Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Noah Tylor, Peter Capaldi, Nicole Kidman, Jim Broadbent, Brendan Gleeson and Hugh Grant, to name but a few, and it's a mighty impressive line up. The visual effects are stunning, the character of Paddington is so sweet and good-natured and the tales are so heartwarming that it almost impossible to not to enjoy the viewing experience.
The first installment sets up the character of Paddington, the anthropomorphic bear who migrates from the jungles of Peru to the streets of London where he is adopted by the Brown family. In London, a terrible taxidermists attempts to add Paddington to her extensive collection.
In the second installment, Paddington is wrongly accused of stealing an expensive pop-up book and finds himself serving hard time (and making marmalade) in the London jail. The Brown family, knowing that Paddington is innocent, set about solving the crime themselves and freeing Paddington.
What's not to like about an adorable little bear in a blue duffle coat having misadventures in London? Paddington is cuteness on overload and with all star cast, these movies provide quality entertainment for the entire family.
FINAL SAY: Aunt Lucy said, if we're kind and polite the world will be right.

FRANKENWEENIE
Release Date: 2012
Rating: PG
Running Time: 87 mins
This 3D stop-motion animated fantasy film, directed by Tim Burton, is a parody and homage to the 1931 film Frankenstein, based on Mary Shelley's book of the same name. Frankenweenie was the first stop-motion movie to be shot in black and white, and is Burton's first non-musical stop-motion animation. The film won the Saturn Award for Best Animated Film and was nominated for an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA.
A young filmmaker and scientist, Victor Frankenstein, is devastated by the accidental death of his beloved companion, Sparky the dog. Inspired by his science teacher's demonstrations on the effects of electricity on frogs, Victor sets about to reanimate Sparky at home in a makeshift lab, using the power of lightening. However, Victor soon realises that there are dire consequences for playing God.
This is fantastic story for children about death and loss, and the difficulties that come with letting go of the one's we love. It is also a fabulous homage to old school film making, and has a dark and yet dazzling polish that is extremely enjoyable to watch. Like all things Burton, it is weird and macabre, but it has a lot of heart, which makes it equally inventive and endearing.
FINAL SAY: They like what science gives them, but not the questions.

BRAVE
Release Date: 2012
Rating: G
Running Time: 93 mins
Finally, an exciting animated feature length film from PIXAR Animation Studios that is all about a mother-daughter relationship. And, it doesn't have a male hero lead role and neither of the two leading females is a doormat or a witch! Rejoice! The story, written by Brenda Chapman, was inspired by her relationship with her own daughter, and there is a feeling of authenticity to the female relationships that has been lacking in past male driven scripts.
Set on the Scottish Highlands, the story focuses on the headstrong princess Merida, who defies an age-old custom by expressing that she does not wish to be betrothed, but would rather become an archer. Merida's rebellious choices lead her down a dark path and she unwittingly unleashes dangerous forces upon her own family.
This is a great family movie, and an especially good watch for girls, however that being said, my son really enjoyed this film as well, so it is not just for girls either. Brave won the Oscar, the BAFTA and the Golden Globe for Best Animation Feature in 2012, surely you don't need anymore convincing than that?

Release Date: 2012
Rating: PG
Running Time: 92 mins
Produced by LAIKA, this children's horror comedy will appeal to audiences of all ages for it's interesting and slightly scary story line and it's original perspective. ParaNorman was the first stop-motion film to use a 3D colour printer to create the character faces and it's unique styling earned it nominations at the Academy Awards and the BAFTA for Best Animated Feature.
The story is centred around the life of Norman (Kodi Smit-McPhee) a boy with the unique ability to see and speak to the dead. Norman's ability has left him feeling ostracized from his family and community, but when an old witch's curse threatens to raise the dead, everyone decides to rely on Norman's odd talents to save their town, making him a very unlikely hero indeed.
Once the dead start to rise, this movie gets pretty crazy, there are lots of creepy characters thrown in for atmosphere, but the wise cracks and one liners come even thicker, making this an overall fun experience.

This fabulous computer-animated superhero movie had me in stitches! Directed by Tom McGrath and produced by Dreamworks Animation, Megamind tells the story of a super-intelligent, super-villain alien who just wants to defeat his nemesis Metro Man and take over the world.
Megamind (Will Ferrell) is the cleverest super villain that the world has ever seen, but his devious plans get thwarted time and time again by the squeaky clean superhero Metro Man (Brad Pitt). When Megamind actually succeeds in defeating in Metro Man, much to his surprise, he finds that his life as a super-villain suddenly seems purposeless without an arch enemy to pursue.
This is a really entertaining children's movie. The animation is stunningly sleek, the humour is heavy and the entire film plays out like a gizmo-crazy sci-fi spectacular. Megamind isn't taking itself seriously enough to have a really strong moral message, but there is definitely a point being relayed about 'keeping your enemies close'.
FINAL SAY: It's REVENGE, and it's best served cold!

ALICE IN WONDERLAND
Release Date: 2010
Rating: PG
Running Time: 108 mins
Tim Burton drops us down the rabbit hole in this exciting and beautifully realised version of Lewis Carroll's classic novel Alice in Wonderland and its 1871 sequel Through the Looking Glass. This is Tim Burton's most successful film to date, taking out the Best Art Direction and Best Costuming awards at the 83rd Academy Awards, and becoming the nineteenth highest grossing film of all time.
Alice escapes marriage by plummeting down a hole after following a very odd white rabbit. She arrives in a surreal place called Underland that is filled with all manner of strange creatures and characters, soon realising that she is there to fulfill her destiny to over throw the evil Red Queen and defeat the terrifying Jabberwocky.
Mia Wasikowska is the most delightful Alice to have ever graced the screen, Johnny Depp is an epic Mad Hatter and Helena Bonham Carter is fabulous as the bulbous headed Red Queen. I particularly loved Anne Hathaway's hysterical portrayal of the White Queen, I thought that she really stole the show. Overall, I was absolutely enchanted and swept away by this grand and magical fairy tale.
FINAL SAY: You're entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret, all the best people are.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 1 & 2
Release Dates: 2010 and 2014
Rating: PG
Running Time: 200 mins total
The How to Train Your Dragon series is easily one of my favourite kids movie offerings because it is so consistently good and the story line is exciting and meaningful. A lot of kids movies really don't have much of a point, but these films seem to have a moral conundrum at play and I like that children are being challenged to think whilst they are watching.
The first instalment introduces us to the city of Berk and all of its wonderful Viking characters. Eventually our main hero Hiccup happens upon a rare and most feared Night Fury dragon that he befriends and names Toothless, and the wheels are set into motion for Berk to be changed forever.
The second instalment sees Hiccup all grown up and falling in love. Berk has become a different and dragon loving place, but now the threat of dragon hunters is the biggest problem.
DreamWorks has done a wonderful job of presenting all of the magic and fantasy of a dragon filled world into a breathtakingly beautiful animation that will enchant children and adults alike for many years to come.
FINAL SAY: I want a Night Fury dragon too!

FANTASTIC MR FOX
Release Date: 2009
Rating: PG
Running Time: 87 mins
Wes Anderson never ceases to delight me. He is the master of absurdity and quirkiness, so naturally his interpretation of Roald Dahl's classic Fantastic Mr Fox was going to be wonderful.
This adorable stop-motion movie is a feast for your eyes from start to end. The details are imaginatively realised with the use of simple and everyday items and there is so much heart in every frame of this work that you will find yourself utterly captivated.
When Mr Fox (voiced perfectly by George Clooney) decides to take on a group of farmers (Boggis, Bunce and Beans) for stocks and supplies, he ends up in all kinds of bother. Eventually, Mr Fox must call on the support of his own community in this showdown of wit and cunning.
This is smart and fresh film-making, and it is worthy of an adult audience just as much as a child's.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE
Release Date: 2009
Rating: PG
Running Time: 101 mins
This is a deep depiction for children's cinema. It has a depth and tone that could easily be lost on many of the young viewers that watch it, but most kids will get a buzz from the huge monster characters and carry on, even if they miss the subtle undertones.
This film has it's own heartbeat, it's wild and it's beautiful in its exploration of the main character Max as he learns to understand just what the wild rumpus within him is all about. Based on the picture story book of the same name by Maurice Sendak, this movie works hard to demonstrate the enormous energy and unbridled power that lies within the heart of a small boy.
It's a complex piece but a must see for all parents with a little slice of testosterone in their homes.

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS
Release Date: 2009
Rating: PG
Running Time: 90 mins
I was so pleasantly surprised by this film, I wasn't holding out a lot of hope given the odd title, but this movie was actually loads of fun to watch and really very funny. Based on the children's book of the same name by Judi and Ron Barrett, this science fiction computer-animation film is clever and engaging.
A wannabe scientist and inventor named Flint Lockwood struggles with his many failed experiments, his technophobic widowed father and the terrible small town attitudes of Swallow Falls. However, when he invents the FLDSMDFR (Flint Lockwood Diatonic Super Mutating Dynamic Food Replicator) and food starts to rain from the skies, he becomes an overnight success. With the high demand for raining foods, Flint over uses his invention and the food begins to mutate and take on a life of it's own.
A fabulous cast has voiced all of the main characters including Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan and Bruce Campbell; and I especially enjoyed Neil Patrick Harris' character Steve the Monkey who communicates through a 'Speak and Spell' translator.
Having seen the sequel Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, I can assure you that none of the momentum from the first instalment has been lost, and it it equally as enjoyable as the first. Bottom line is, that these are fast paced, witty animations that are just plain good fun.
FINAL SAY: Have you ever felt like you were a little bit different?

9
Release Date: 2009
Rating: PG
Running Time: 79 mins
This computer generated post-apocalyptic science fiction movie was directed by Shane Acker and produced by Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov. 9 was based Acker's Academy Award nominated short film of the same name, and met with mixed reviews at its time of release. It has gone on to have a cult following mostly due to its steampunk themes.
The world has been destroyed in a battle between man and machine, and the planet is in ruin. A ragdoll with the number 9 sketched on to his back awakens and discovers, through finding others like him, that he is carrying a disk that appears to be the key to human salvation.
This is quite a dark children's movie, the post apocalyptic world is dark, broken and desolate, but the ragdoll characters are so refreshingly unusual and interesting that it makes up for all of that. It is certainly not a light hearted romp, but with an adult present during a watch, there will be much to discuss during and after the credits have rolled.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL
Release Date: 2009
Rating: PG
Running Time: 96 mins
A beautifully realised, animated adaptation of the classic 1843 Charles Dicken's novella of the same name. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, this movie is a Christmas favourite in our home and one that we return to every year to get us all into the spirit of the season.
A miserly accountant named Ebenezer Scrooge (Jim Carrey) is awakened on Christmas Eve by the three ghosts from his past, present and future, that will force him to address his cruel and unfeeling ways, before it is too late.
The animation is an absolute delight to behold, the classic snowy London backdrop is portrayed perfectly, and the sights and sounds are magical. The story is essentially as dark as it is hopeful, so there are a few scares for the little ones, but there is also a lot of colour and adventure for them to enjoy. A Christmas Carol really gets to the heart of what Christmas is truly about, and it's a great moral tale in regards to life and how it is never too late to change your ways.

CORALINE
Release Date: 2009
Rating: PG
Running Time: 100 mins
Based on the Neil Gaiman novella of the same name, this stop-motion realisation is a dark little tale indeed. Having also read the book, I was delighted to see that none of the magic or the macabre had been watered down, but this is definitely not a movie for smaller children and parents should heed its PG rating.
When curious Coraline finds another world that is a strange and yet more exciting version of her own, she thinks she has hit the jackpot. But things are not as they seem in this other world and something sinister is at play.
Under Henry Selick's direction (Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach) you are going to get creepy undertones and deep metaphors, but you'll also get intelligent children's cinema, so hooray for that - I loved it!

WALL-E
Release Date: 2008
Rating: G
Running Time: 98 mins
An endearing little 'clean up' robot called WALL-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter-Earth class) is all alone on the planet. The humans left years ago on a giant spacecraft that is drifting around in space due to Earth's incredibly high pollution levels and overwhelming landfill problems. After 700 years alone, WALL-E encounters EVE, a sleek and shapely space probe sent to Earth on a scanning mission and after falling for her, WALL-E follows her across the galaxy on an intergalactic adventure that is set to change the future for humanity.
Produced by PIXAR Animation Studios and directed by Andrew Stanton, this is a beautifully put together piece that speaks volumes about consumerism and the immense impact that humans have on the planet. WALL-E won the Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Animation Feature and it ranked #1 in TIME's Best Movies of the Decade.
This movie should be on every child's must see list because it is addressing so many important societal issues and because WALL-E is the most darling robot that has ever graced the screen. It's a fantastic movie, touching and funny, and no one should miss it.

BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA
Release Date: 2007
Rating: PG
Running Time: 96 mins
This movie is for those that like a little adventure and magic in their lives. Based on the novel of the same name by Katherine Paterson, Bridge to Terabithia is a beautiful story about friendship, imagination and being yourself that I think most kids would relate to.
Pre-teens Jesse and Leslie become fast friends against the odds and create an imaginary world called Terabithia together. In this land they rule as King and Queen, fighting off trolls, monsters and giants; but also forging a friendship that allows them both to grow and learn from each other.
Be warned, this film has it's fair share of tragedy and I found myself sobbing away on the couch next to the kids when I saw it, so get your tissues at the ready.

RATATOUILLE
Release Date: 2007
Rating: G
Running Time: 111 mins
I just adored this Disney animation about a rat with a natural gift for cooking; the combination of the Parisian streetscape and rat infested sewers make a very interesting setting for this tale about a rather unlikely foodie that followed his dreams against the odds.
Remy the rat has aspirations of becoming a world class chef, much to the disgust of his kin. However, a twist of fate places Remy in the sewers below his culinary hero Auguste Gusteau's famous Parisian restaurant, and after a chance meeting with a bumbling Suez chef, he finds a rather unorthodox way of making his dreams a reality.
There is real sense of fun to this movie, the characters - both human and rodent, are a fabulous mix of flavours that will enchant children and amuse adults equally. Get yourself to France for a delicious sampling of Ratatouille as soon as soon as you can.

THE GOLDEN COMPASS
Release Date: 2007
Rating: PG
Running Time: 113 mins
Based on the novel Northern Lights, the first in Philip Pullman's highly successful trilogy - His Dark Materials, this is a watered down version of the original in which all of the anti-religious elements have been removed, and I need to be extremely honest here, fans of the books aren't going to love this movie, it really isn't nearly as good as the book.
However that being said, it does have some marvelous depictions of the main characters and I know a number of people that haven't read the book thought that this was really good. It did win a BAFTA and an Academy Award for it's amazing visual effects and any movie that depicts Nicole Kidman walking about with a monkey and preaches the importance of free will, making connections, staying strong through great adversity and fighting for your loved ones can't be all bad now can it?
The story focuses on the experiences of a young girl named Lyra Belacqua that lives in a parallel world where each person's soul takes the form of an animal companion called a Daemon. A dark group called the Gobblers is hard at work stealing these Daemons from kidnapped children, so when Lyra's friend goes missing, she feels compelled to enlist all of the help that she can to find him before it is too late.
An all star cast including Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee and Eva Green add some meat to the bones of the story, and the fantasy landscapes and characters are lush and beautifully realised. If it wasn't for the obvious plot holes this could've been epic so it feels like a bit of a missed opportunity on that front.

MR MAGORIUM'S WONDER EMPORIUM
Release Date: 2007
Rating: G
Running Time: 93 mins
Mr Magorium, a toy impresario, a wonder aficionado and an avid shoe wearer runs the best toy emporium in town. His emporium is a magical place where everything, including the store itself, has a life of its own. Employee and musical genius Mahoney (Natalie Portman) is wracked with self doubt and frustration and when Henry Weston (Jason Bateman) the straight laced accountant arrives to check over the emporiums accounts, everything is thrown into chaos.
Perhaps it was the child in me that liked this movie so much, or maybe it was the lonely child character Eric that I identified with, whatever the reason, unlike hundreds of critics that hated this film, I adored it.
I thought that Portman was enchanting as Mahoney, and the story of Mr Magorium and his wonder emporium really hit a chord for me. This is a touching and beautiful fantasy movie for children, Dustin Hoffman does a great job of portraying the eccentric and kooky Mr Magorium who has lived for more than 200 years and owns a pet zebra. Mostly, a lot of what happens doesn't make sense, but it doesn't need to because it is the nonsense factor that makes this movie so great.

MONSTER HOUSE
Release Date: 2006
Rating: PG
Running Time: 91 mins
A kids CGI movie about a haunted house, what's not to like here? I went to the cinema to see this and was thoroughly impressed with the story, the voice casting and the animation. Directed by Gil Kenan, Monster House is the first film that Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis have collaborated on since Back to the Future III and it came close to taking out the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, but was unfairly pipped at the post by Happy Feet which I didn't like as much as Monster House.
Best friends DJ and Chowder find themselves battling an extremely scary and clearly haunted house when Chowder loses his basketball on old man Nebbercracker's lawn. With the help of smart girl Jenny, the trio try to uncover the mysteries of Nebbercracker's creepy old house and finally give the spooked neighbourhood kids some peace.
This is a great supernatural comedy for children, the characters are really clever and the older teen contingency is just hysterical. Fabulous voice efforts are offered by Steve Buscemi, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Catherine O'Hara and Kathleen Turner and although it is not a movie that is going to appeal to all children because of it's scary premise, it actually has a surprisingly touching and unusual resolution in the end.

ARTHUR AND THE INVISIBLES
Release Date: 2006
Rating: PG
Running Time: 94 mins
Director Luc Besson steps into the world of the extremely tiny people with this mixture of reality and sophisticated hyper-realistic animation to bring his children's books Arthur and the Minimoys and Arthur and the Forbidden City to life.
Ten year old Arthur's grandfather has been missing for years, and his grandmother's house is now in danger of being torn down since her husband is not around to sign the necessary paperwork that will save their home. Arthur stumbles upon a key and some clues that indicate to where his grandfather could be, and sets out on a mission to find him.
This is a great little adventure story, that kids will really enjoy. The characters are quirky and the action is high paced. Freddie Highmore was the perfect choice to play the spirited and intelligent role of Arthur and Mia Farrow makes a great weird Granny. A massive array of other well known actors have added their voicing talents to this effort, too many to even begin to list here, but they really add an extra element to the movie.
There is actually a trilogy of Arthur and the Invisible movies, all of which are great fun and worth a viewing, but the first instalment is the best place to start for obvious reasons.
FINAL SAY: Big adventures in small spaces.

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM
Release Date: 2006
Rating: PG
Running Time: 108 mins
A fantasy comedy movie that spawned a whole franchise of other movies, Night at the Museum hits all the right notes when it comes to good children's cinema.
The first instalment establishes that the exhibits at the New York City Museum of Natural History come to life at night due to the magic from an ancient Egyptian artefact, and there have been two more instalments since that have added to this rather interesting and imaginative storyline.
The second instalment, released in 2009 was called Battle for the Smithsonian, the third in 2014 was dubbed Secret of the Tomb and there is also a fourth instalment that is lined up to be released in 2022 called Kahmunrah Rises Again. And although the formula always remains pretty much the same, these films are always highly enjoyable and really quite amusing.
This is mostly due to the terrific actors and consistent comedy cast that headline these films, which includes Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Steve Coogan, Ricky Gervais, Patrick Gallagher, Rami Malek, Mizuo Peck and the late, great Robin Williams.
They're funny, silly and just plain good fun and every one of them is worth a look.

HOODWINKED!
Release Date: 2005
Rating: PG
Running Time: 80 mins
Hoodwinked! was one of the first independent computer-animated films to be produced without a distributor. On a shoe-string budget, it was created in the Philippines and to further save costs, many of the friends and family members of the filmmakers did the voice performances for the small character roles. The film was later picked up by the Weinstein Company for distribution.
Loosely based on the Brothers Grimm fairytale Little Red Riding Hood, the story is told through a non-linear crime drama setting, where secret lives and surprises and revealed about the characters as the crime is solved. The character of Red was patterned on James Dean and the Wolf was based on Chevy Chase's character in Fletch, giving the entire movie a comical feel.
The story begins at the end, when Chief Grizzly and the animal investigators are called out to disturbance at Granny's cottage that involves a girl, a wolf and an axe. But does this incident have anything to with the recent spat of crimes that have been committed by the illusive 'Goody Bandit' who is still at large?
Hilarity ensues and all previous perceptions of beloved fairytale creatures are altered in this very funny and cleverly written story. With the help of some big names like Anne Hathaway, Glenn Close, James Belushi and Patrick Warburton this film plays out beautifully and I found this new take on the secret life of Red and her friends fabulously enjoyable.
FINAL SAY: There's more to every tale than meets the eye.

CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY
Release Date: 2005
Rating: PG
Running Time: 115 mins
When Roald Dahl himself disapproved of the 1971 film adaption of his children's novel, and declined the rights to produce the sequel Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, it was inevitable that a remake would ensue. Warner Bros. approached the Dahl estate in 1991 with the idea for a remake, and many years later they agreed, as long as they received total artistic control. With the assistance of Tim Burton, the family happily allowed a remake to be made, and it is a true homage to Dahl's vision and a delightfully wacky children's movie.
Five children win golden tickets which allow them to visit Willy Wonka's secretive and magical chocolate factory for a day. As they encounter all of the strange and wondrous inventions and beings that inhabit the factory, one by one they fall into demise, mainly created by their own doing.
Johnny Depp is absolutely amazing as Wonka, slightly scary and genuinely odd in every way. The child cast and their chosen adult company are also really well cast, and the Oompa Loompas, all played by Deep Roy, are a cavalry of colour and sound. This is a remake that Dahl would have loved, and a far truer version than than the 70's musical; we may now actually get to see the sequel on the big screen sometime in the future.
FINAL SAY: This is the story of an ordinary little boy named Charlie Bucket.

WALLACE AND GROMIT - THE CURSE OF THE WERE-RABBIT
Release Date: 2005
Rating: G
Running Time: 85 mins
I have always been a fan of all things Wallace and Gromit related, and generally all things Aardman related as well. Dreamworks and Aardman actually teamed up on this adventure, and created what I believe to be the best Easter kids flick of all time. It deservingly took out the Academy Award for Best Animation in 2005 for it's fabulous stop motion techniques, but more than that, it's super funny and great exciting viewing that the whole family can enjoy.
Wallace and his trusty dog companion Gromit have started a business as pest controllers called Anti Pesto. A giant rabbit is terrorizing the local neighbourhood and eating all of the prize vegetables that were to be entered in the town fair competitions. Lady Tottington (Helena Bonham Carter) hires the duo to stop the rabbit and save her crops, but they soon discover that this is no ordinary rabbit.
Hilarious antics ensue with a strong voice cast to carry it all home; a cracking way to spend 85 minutes of your time.

HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE
Release Date: 2004
Rating: PG
Running Time: 119 mins
Produced by Studio Ghibli, this Japanese fantasy animation was scripted and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and is based on the novel of the same name by British writer Diana Wynne Jones. After it's premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Howl's Moving Castle went onto become one of the most financially successful Japanese films of all time, and it is easy to see why, this film is truly a delicate and beautiful piece of children's cinema.
Sophie, a young hat maker, encounters a powerful and extremely odd wizard named Howl. Unbeknownst to Sophie, Howl is being pursued by the evil Witch of the Waste, who puts a spell on Sophie after she refuses her service due to her rudeness. Sophie is transformed into a ninety year old woman and must travel through the Wastes, to seek a cure for her transformation.
Howl's Moving Castle is a sophisticated children's film, with lots of adult emotions and concepts, and at the heart of it all, it is essentially a romance tale. Christian Bale does a fabulous job of voicing Howl, and Lauren Bacall is the perfect choice for the voice of the Witch of the Waste. There is something here for children and adults and alike, and although I didn't like it as much as Spirited Away, it was an enjoyable watch and definitely a good family viewing experience.

LEMONY SNICKET'S - A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS
Release Date: 2004
Rating: PG
Running Time: 108 mins
Why there haven't been more of these movies made is just beyond me, I loved this film, and also really enjoyed the book series. There is a wonderfully dark, steam-punk atmosphere to the film, which is based on the first three novels in the series, outlining the terrible and unbelievable events that occur in the lives of three orphans.
The Baudelaire children, Violet, Klaus and Sunny all have unique talents. After their parents are killed in a mysterious house fire, they find themselves orphaned and entrusted to their only living relative, the villainous Count Olaf. Their once happy lives soon become a series of truly unfortunate and strange events, forcing them to use and combine their talents to get out of a number of sticky situations.
Jim Carrey is fantastic as Count Olaf, with his insensitive and often hilarious shenanigans. The child cast, boasting a very young Emily Browning as Violet, are wonderfully entertaining, and credit must be given to Meryl Streep for her wacky portrayal of Aunt Josephine. But it is Billy Connolly's darling performance as the herpetologist Monty that won my heart, who wouldn't want an uncle that kept an incredibly deadly viper in their home?
This is a wonderful family movie, both of my children adored it and it is one that we regularly revisit, just as much for me as them!

Rating: G
Running Time: 100 mins
Pixar Animation Studios really raised the bar with their computer animated, comedy-drama Finding Nemo. This movie tells a meaningful and heartfelt tale of a father-son relationship set under the sea in Australia.
When young clown fish Nemo gets taken from the Great Barrier Reef by a diver, his father Marlin sets out on an epic adventure across the ocean to find his son. Meanwhile Nemo, who has arrived in Sydney, finds himself in a dentist's fish tank filled with a bevvy of other tropical fish that are keen to make an escape.
There are loads of laughs to be had here, mostly coming from Ellen DeGeneres' character Dory; but more than that, this movie is a visual delight with it's brightly coloured depictions of life aquatic.

Note: Finding Dory (2016) was an excellent sequel to Finding Nemo and every bit as beautiful and enjoyable as it's predecessor. Boasting a consistent voice cast, this next adventure of sea life mishap is based around a city aquarium and offers a solid 3.5 Chilli Pepper viewing experience.

SCHOOL OF ROCK
Release Date: 2003
Rating: PG
Running Time: 108 mins
This hilarious comedy written by Mike White and directed by Richard Linklater is a winner. The soundtrack is totally kick ass and made it into my own CD collection; the kids are amazingly talented and Jack Black is hilarious as the fake substitute teacher that just wants to get to the battle of the bands.
Dewey Finn is a wannabe rock star that has been just been kicked out of his band for his over the top behaviours. When an opportunity arises for him to moonlight as a substitute at an uptight private school, he sees it as way to raise some much needed funds. However, when he realises how musically talented his students are, he changes course and decides to take his bunch of fourth graders to the "battle of the bands" competition instead of teaching them.
This is seriously funny stuff. Joan Cusack is gold as the Stevie Nicks loving principal , the kids are all stellar and rock their tiny hearts out and the overall effect is spirited and thoroughly enjoyable. I think that this is one of the best family movies around, everyone will get a laugh and have a lot of fun.

SHREK
Release Date: 2001
Rating: G
Running Time: 90 mins
Dreamworks pictures received lots of attention for this computer animated fantasy-comedy loosely based on the fairy tale picture book Shrek! by William Steig. Shrek was an all round massive success, both at the box office and critically, and it won the first ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
When Shrek the ogre's swamp is over-run by fairy tale creatures at the hands of the tiny and yet very evil Lord Farquaad, he sets off to put things straight. Along the way he befriends a loud mouthed donkey and finds that the only way that he can win back his beloved swamp is to rescue a princess from a fire breathing dragon for Lord Farquaad. But this is no ordinary princess and things get very complicated very quickly.
Shrek is a timeless movie, all of the classic fairytale creatures are portrayed with much humour and frivolity, and unlike the following string of Shrek movies it isn't reliant on events of the moment, so it will never age and will appeal to many generations to come.
The cast is amazing, from Mike Meyer's heavily accented Shrek to Eddie Murphy's fast talking Donkey, this is a treasure trove of hilarious characters and great one liners. The laughs come thick and fast, the story line is interesting and original and the whole family are guaranteed to enjoy this fabulous children's movie.

The Who's of Whoville are all set for another Christmas extravaganza of Ben Hur proportions, however young Cindy Lou Who fears that the spirit of Christmas has been lost and is looking for a way to rekindle it. She sets out to engage The Grinch, a grumpy outcast recluse that despises all Who's and all things Christmas. With his dog Max, the Grinch plans on stealing Christmas, but Cindy Lou's ideals for a better and more inclusive Christmas get in his way.
Jim Carrey is tremendous as the Grinch, adding loads of humour and physical excitement to his role. The cast is comprised of genuinely funny actors including Christine Baranski, Jeffrey Tambor and Molly Shannon and the overall effect is magical and hilarious. There is a great moral story at play for kids to consider about the real meaning of Christmas and it's a great choice for a pre-Christmas viewing.

THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE
Release Date: 2000
Rating: G
Running Time: 78 mins
This animated movie completely cracked me up, I am pretty sure that I got more out of this than my kids, and that my laugh could be heard three doors down. Created by Walt Disney Animation Studios, directed by Mark Dindal and written by David Reynolds, The Emperor's New Groove took six years to develop and was met with generally favourable reviews for it's fast paced, fresh and hilarious antics.
The arrogant and unpleasant South American Emperor Kuzco (David Spade) has been turned into a llama by his devious advisor Yzma (Eartha Kitt). When he becomes stranded in the jungle, he finds hope in the form of Pacha (John Goodman) a kind-hearted peasant that agrees to help Kuzco to take back his throne and his natural form. However, Yzma and her bumbling side kick Kronk (Patrick Warburton) have plans to finish Kuzco off and they are trying to tracking him down.
Unlike other Disney animations, there isn't a princess in sight and the only royalty to be seen is unscrupulously sinister, so it would be fair to say that this was definitely a break out film for Disney animations. What this film really has going for it is the humour, it is very funny and witty. Kronk is easily the funniest character in the movie, so it is easy to see why The Emperor's New Groove 2 - Kronk's New Groove was made as a spin off, that character deserves his own movie; and having also seen the second, I can say that it too is a worthy children's movie and a decent sequel.
FINAL SAY: I was a junior chipmunk, and had to be versed in all the woodland creatures.

HERCULES
Release Date: 1997
Rating: G
Running Time: 93 mins
This is easily my favourite Disney animation of all time. The humour is intensely speckled with so much dark sarcasm that you can't help but laugh, all the while it will be parting your kid's hair as it flies unseen over their precious little heads.
Hercules has been stripped of his immortality and cast down to earth to live as a mortal. But Hercules knows that he is different and seeks to win his way back to Mt Olympus through a series of labours that will prove him worthy to walk among the Gods. However, Hades needs to make sure that Hercules never returns or it will be the end for him, so he sets a series of traps and distractions to steer him off course.
This is a gem of a movie, one that I return to again and again when I need a hit of comedy and Greek mythology. James Wood is so brilliant as the voice of Hades that he steals the show completely - this is his movie. And Susan Egan's street smart and wise cracking Megara will always be my favourite of the Disney Princess offerings.

MATILDA
Release Date: 1996
Rating: PG
Running Time: 102 mins
Based on the Roald Dahl book of the same name, Matilda tells the tale of an extremely gifted child surrounded by terrible adults. Her parents are moronic and ignorant, her school principal is a sadist and her unique talents are grossly overlooked. That is until Matilda meets Miss Honey, the sweetest teacher on the planet, and together they develop Matilda's gifts and conquer their own demons.
Like all Roald Dahl stories, the meanies always get their comeuppance in the end, and there is a delightfully happy ending, making this a triumphant fantasy story about embracing your gifts and finding your way against the odds. It was also great to see so many female characters in lead roles, something that is drastically missing from children's cinema and I always like to see a heroine rather than another hero for a change.
Real life husband and wife Danny Devito and Rhea Perlman do a great job of portraying Matilda's clueless parents, Embeth Davidtz is super sweet as Miss Honey and Pam Ferris will freak kids out with her horrifying portrayal of Trunchbull.
Matilda is an enjoyable and often humorous watch; a true crowd pleaser.

JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH
Release Date: 1996
Rating: PG
Running Time: 79 mins
A musical, fantasy children's film directed by Henry Selick and based on the 1961 novel of the same name by Roald Dahl. This book was always a favourite of mine as a child so naturally I have a huge affinity for it as a movie and it is realised so beautifully here with lots of colour, stop motion animation and terrifically over the top, triumphant characters.
Poor young James Trotter becomes orphaned when his parents are killed in an unfortunate rhinoceros accident and he is forced to go and live with his two evil aunts. Aunt Sponge and aunt Spiker revel in making James do all of the menial tasks and the boys life seems utterly joyless until one day when he meets a strange man with a bag of magical 'crocodile tongues.' The tongues cause a huge peach to grow in the garden. And within the peach, James finds several huge anthropomorphic insects that set about escaping the evil aunt's garden to embark on a journey to New York City.
This is a wonderful, timeless and seriously arresting piece of cinema that I just adore. The insect characters are brilliantly fleshed out, the aunts are deviously evil and the casting and voice acting is absolutely on point. James and the Giant Peach is a must see movie for children and adults alike, and it was a favourite and much beloved film of both of my children.

THE TOY STORY TRILOGY
Release Date: 1995, 1999, 2010
Rating: G
Running Time: 276 mins total.
Three incredible instalments, and a fourth one due for release in 2018 - the Toy Story Trilogy is easily one of the best examples of quality children's cinema that has ever been created. The first Toy Story was also the first full feature length film to be made entirely using computer generated imagery - and boy PIXAR sure knew what they were doing. Not only did Toy Story go on make two more highly successful movies, but the franchise expanded into a multi-million dollar industry of toys, collectibles, video games, spin off cartoons and shorts, comics, theme park attractions and unnameable amounts of other merchandise. Yep, even my kids owned a Buzz and Woody doll!
But let's get back to those fabulous movies. Each instalment takes us on another adventure with Andy's toys; tightly focused upon the antics of the cowboy character Woody and the space toy Buzz Lightyear. With an entourage of awesome toys, our two heroes overcome all manner of adversity and foe, including the torturous and destructive child Sid, the greedy toy collector Al McWhiggin and the terrifyingly psychotic teddy Lotso.
Each storyline is equally strong in my mind, and for consistency, I just cannot fault the Toy Story Trilogy. Painstaking efforts have been made to keep character voices consistent, and Tom Hanks and Tim Allen are just wonderful as Woody and Buzz. There's a swag of adult humour to enjoy, there's a tonne of excitement with a fresh dialogue between the characters and every toy has a true identity of their own. If you don't get a certain level out of joy out from watching these movies with your kids, then you probably don't have a pulse!

JUMANJI
Release Date: 1995
Rating: PG
Running Time: 104 mins
Directed by Joe Johnson (known in the 1990's for his debut film Honey I Shrunk the Kids) this fantasy adventure movie based on the 1981 children's book by Chris Van Allsburg, will appeal to audiences of all ages with its intense special effects and excitingly unpredictable outcomes.
Whilst exploring an old mansion, a brother and sister happen upon a mysterious and ancient game called Jumanji. The trouble with this game is that the weird events that happen within the game, actually become a part of the real world. Before they realise what they have started, the children have unleashed all manner of havoc upon their local town.
With Robin Williams at the helm, there are a lot of silly antics going on here. A good support cast that includes of a very young Kirsten Dunst deliver convincingly to bring the tale together neatly.
This movie has a strong moral undertone to it about finishing what you start that most kids will not only understand but also enjoy immensely.
FINAL SAY: It's your roll.

Note: The 2017 reboot Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, starring Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and Jack Black takes the Jumanji game into a modern console playing field and is equally as good as the original. It is probably aimed at more pre-teenage audience and is definitely strengthened by its strong pop culture references and humorous cast.

THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS
Release Date: 1993
Rating: PG
Running Time: 76 mins
Tim Burton melds the magic of Christmas with the terror of Halloween in this beautiful and somewhat macabre claymation-musical. The story revolves around the life of Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King and most revered character in Halloween Town. Jack in his desire to find new thrills in life stumbles across Christmas town and causes the balance between the two worlds to shift. This is a quirky and slightly scary children's movie, but behind the horrors there is a gentle message about the comfort of home and being true to yourself that cannot be ignored.
Not for preschoolers, but primary kids will love the crazy characters and catchy tunes, it's a magical piece of work.

THE WITCHES
Release Date: 1990
Rating: PG
Running Time: 91 mins
I can recall the librarian reading this book to our class in primary school, and from that moment on, I was an avid and devoted Roald Dahl fan. Directed by Nicholas Roeg and produced by Jim Henson Productions, The Witches boasts some amazing special effects and use of puppetry to enhance it's wildly fun, fantasy story about real witches that live among us mere humans.
Luke and his grandmother are on a holidays by the seaside when they accidentally encounter a witches convention. Luke learns of their evil plan to turn all children into mice, and must devise his own plan to stop the terrible Grand High Witch from succeeding.
Anjelica Huston is exceptionally good as The Grand High Witch, a character that is evil and uncompromising in every way, and she is clearly the heart and soul of this film. Notable bit parts are filled by Rowan Atkinson, Jane Horrocks and Bill Paterson but no-one can compete with Huston's rein of terror here.
Some of the effects, although now fairly outdated, could still prove frightening to little children, so watch with caution; especially when the witches start to literally let their hair down!
FINAL SAY: Steer clear of Formula 86.
3 Chilli Peppers
Note: The 2020 reboot featuring Anne Hathaway as The Grand High Witch modernises the tale with flashy visual effects, some slight storyline adjustments and an unnecessary new character, but in my opinion it doesn't really improve on what was already established by the 1990 effort. Given the choice, I would still go for the original version because Anjelica Houston's performance is so seriously wicked!

LABYRINTH
Release Date: 1986
Rating: G
Running Time: 101 mins
Starring a young Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie in the scariest pants that you will ever see, Labyrinth is a fantastic 80's family movie, filled with magic, fantasy and adventure. Directed by Jim Henson (this was the last feature film he made before his death in 1990) and produced by George Lucas, Labyrinth is an exciting and unique mixture of puppetry and music that will get your toes tapping and your spirits high.
15 year old Sarah (Connelly) is annoyed about having to take care of her toddler brother Toby. After wishing him away, the Goblin King (Bowie) steals Toby and takes him to the Goblin realms. Sarah must navigate a dangerous labyrinth full of tricks and deceptions in order to get her brother back. Along the way she encounters a Dwarvish Hoggle, a talking worm, a large beast and a sheepdog riding fox, that assist her through the maze.
It's an all out modern twist on the Wizard of Oz, with Sarah being the Dorothy character that is lured away from Kansas by a malevolent sorcerer and thrown into a world of wild unpredictability. Bottom line is that it's fun and fantastical, and has always been a family favourite in our home.

THE GOONIES
Release Date: 1985
Rating: PG
Running Time: 114 mins
This is one of the best action-adventure movie for kids that has ever been made. I loved it when I was eleven, both of my kids loved it and I am yet to meet someone that didn't get a kick out of it when they were a kid. Directed by Richard Donner, written by Chris Columbus and produced by Steven Spielberg, this movie has just the right mix of adventure, action and awkward pre-teen antics to make it a real winner.
A group of kids from the Goon Docks find an old treasure map, a doubloon and an article about a famous pirate named one-eyed willy (yes, I know, a very unfortunate name). Desperate to save their homes from the threat of a pending foreclosure, they set out on an adventure to find the treasure, facing all manner of 'booby traps' and a family of criminals called the Fratellis that want a piece of the treasure action.
This is crazy good fun, sporting a young and talented cast including Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman and Martha Plimpton. Sure, it's an impossible and implausible plot line, but who cares? It's fun, and even now I can still get a good laugh out of it.

THE WIZARD OF OZ
Release Date: 1939
Rating: PG
Running Time: 102 mins
It's an MGM golden oldie alright, but those bloody flying monkeys still manage to creep little kids out even today! It's difficult to say what I like best about this film, is it the ruby slippers? Maybe it's all that singing that Dorothy does, or maybe it's some link to my own childhood that I find so engaging, who really cares? It's a classic that speaks volumes about girl power and bitches fighting over shoes.
When Dorothy's house gets blow away by a massive twister, she awakens to find herself in the magical Land of Oz. Oz is a joyful place, filled with munchkin people and good witches, but in order to get home again Dorothy must get her wish granted by a wizard. Seems simple enough, until the Wicked Witch of the West turns up demanding her ruby slippers back that magically ended up on Dorothy's feet after her house squashed the wicked witches sister to death, who just happened to be wearing them at the time.
Anyway, Dorothy has to avoid the green faced witch (and her creepy flying monkeys) and get to the wizard by following a yellow brick road. Along the way she befriends a tin man, a scarecrow and a lion that all need their wishes granted too. It's all really weird, but somehow it works!
Oz is captured in brilliant technicolor brightness and back home in Kansas is black and white, which was a clever and exciting new idea back in the 1930's. Judy Garland is so young and adorable as Dorothy, and man she sure can sing and dance. But it was always Margaret Hamilton's portrayal of the Wicked Witch of the West that really freaked me out as a kid, she's just so deliciously evil!
FINAL SAY: I'll get you my pretty, and your little dog too!
