THE HALL OF FAME LIST
POOR THINGS
Release Date: 2023
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 142 mins
If you are looking for something completely out of the box and utterly unique then look no further, Poor Things delivers on all counts. Brilliantly fantastical, artistically designed and continually teetering on the verge of being absolutely bonkers, this latest offering from visionary director Yorgos Lanthimos is not only his best work, but for me, is one of the best movies of 2023. And after garnering lots of attention for it's salacious behaviours and just as many accolades for it's terrific performances and original story-telling, Poor Things quickly became the must see movie of the year.
Dr. Godwin Baxter, a Frankenstein-eque surgeon, discovers the beautiful, pregnant but unfortunately dead body of a young woman by the edge of a London river. He decides to transplant the brain of her still alive but unborn baby into her adult body and re-animate her, creating 'Bella' a child-like adult in search of delicious and daring experiences.
This is a wildly original romp into madness and hilarity with Emma Stone delivering at her best as Bella, Mark Ruffalo amusing completely as the lecherous deviant Duncan Wedderburn and Willem Dafoe bringing hideous-genius to life as Dr Godwin Baxter. However underneath all of the hilarity is a story that delivers like a modern day fairy-tale of self discovery, enlightenment and deliverance that is both playful and contemplative.
The fantasy design and costumes are strikingly good, the details are just amazing, from start to end. I am fairly sure that this is a film that people are going to talk about for years to come, and one that is destined to become a cult classic. For me, Poor Things hits all the right notes in all the right order, and I couldn't help but applaud it and award it a Hall of Fame - 5 Chilli Peppers of greatness.
FINAL SAY: I have adventured it and found nothing but sugar and violence.

GUILLERMO DEL TORO'S PINOCCHIO
Release Date: 2022
Rating: M
Running Time: 117 mins
A stop motion, musical and dark fantasy film from director Guillermo del Toro that is loosely based on the 1883 Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi and strongly influenced by Gris Grimly's illustrations for a 2022 edition of the book. Guillermo del Toro called this film his 'passion project' stating that "No art form has influenced my life and my work more than animation and no single character in history has had as deep of a personal connection to me as Pinocchio." And after 15 years in the making, Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is astoundingly great in every respect; a film not just for children but very much for adults as well.
Set in fascist Italy during the interwar period and World War II, a carpenter named Geppetto tragically loses his son Carlo after an air-raid on their small village. Grieving, the drunken father chops down a pine tree that is home to a cricket named Sebastian J. Cricket, who becomes the narrator of the tale. In a drunken stupor Geppetto creates a rough wooden boy-like puppet from the felled pine tree and after some magic from a Wood Sprite, the puppet springs to life. And so the tale of Pinocchio begins, a puppet who has to learn about loyalty, expectation and love in a mostly cold and judgemental world.
The voice casting is simply perfect with Ewan McGregor, David Bradley, Tilda Swinton, Ron Perlman, Cate Blanchett and Christoph Waltz all shining here. However, it is the puppets themselves that steal the show here because the stop motion animation and meticulous attention to detail with the puppets and sets is nothing short of incredible. The detail is just mind blowing and the storyline itself is darling in every way possible.
Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is unlike anything that I have ever seen before in respect to craftsmanship and detail; this film is an unmissable treat both for the eyes and the heart, and it is easily my favourite movie of 2022.
FINAL SAY: You did bring me joy. Terrible, terrible joy.

THE POWER OF THE DOG
Release Date: 2021
Rating: M
Running Time: 126 mins
An intelligent and genuinely intriguing film; written, produced and directed by Jane Campion, The Power of the Dog is mesmerising and disturbing in equal measures. With marvellous sweeping landscapes and enough sideways glances to make anyone uncomfortable, its hard to look away from the screen whilst you are watching this. After winning the Best Motion Picture - Drama at the 79th Golden Globe Awards, The Power of Dog swiftly gained attention and became the buzz film of early 2022.
The Burbank brothers are wealthy ranchers from Montana. One is a mild mannered gentleman named George and the other is a severe and intimidating cowboy named Phil. When George falls for a widow named Rose and brings her and her impressionable son Peter to their ranch to live, tensions rise as Phil attempts to assert himself over the newcomers.
This is a slow burning western drama, so it isn't going to appeal to everyone, but it certainly appealed to me. The cast is unbelievably good here, with Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons delivering their finest, but it was young Kodi Smit-McPhee that stole the show here with his unassuming observations and contemplative behaviours as Rose's son Peter that really engrossed me.
I loved this film from start to end, it explores the hardest of the hard and also the tenderest of souls, which is a contrast that I am always drawn to, and just like all of Jane Campion's efforts, this was a total winner for me.
FINAL SAY: Deliver my soul from the sword. My darling from the power of the dog.

SOUL
Release Date: 2020
Rating: PG
Running Time: 100 mins
A computer animated fantasy film produced by Pixar Animations and released by Walt Disney Pictures. Soul is easily the best children's film and definitely one of the best movies to come out of 2020. With a concept that could be considered too adult for children to fully comprehend, Soul skilfully weaves a tale about mindfulness and living your best life that in my opinion, won't be lost on audiences of any age.
Middle school music teacher Joe Gardner has always aspired to become a successful jazz musician. That dream seems like it is about to become a reality when Joe lands the chance to play with jazz legend Dorothea Williams. However, when Joe takes a tumble down a manhole and arrives in the afterlife, his dreams of becoming a jazz star look highly unlikely.
Visually magnificent, musically enchanting and filled with otherworldly delights, Soul is a pleasure to watch whilst still delivering a beautiful and thoughtful message about the way in which we engage in our everyday lives. This film has a high vibration to it that is absolutely intoxicating and I adored it.
Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Graham Norton, Rachel House and Richard Ayoade deliver incredible voice acting to their characters and the entire experience is nothing short of enchanting. Soul is unmissable viewing for all ages.
FINAL SAY: Life is full of possibilities. You just need to know where to look. Don't miss out on the joys of life.

1917
Release Date: 2019
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 119 mins
A war epic; directed, co-written and produced by Sam Mendes, and easily his most prolific and immersive movie thus far. 1917 received great acclaim and praise for its impressive technical achievements and intensely realistic depictions of trench warfare during World War I.
In April 1917, two young British soldiers, Blake and Schofield, are sent on a mission to hand-deliver a message to the Second battalion of the Devonshire Regiment. The order calls for the men to stand down with their planned attack on the Germans. To go through with the attack would cost the lives of 1,600 men, including Blake's brother Joseph, so their timely arrival is imperative, but the journey through enemy territory to deliver that message is fraught with danger and peril.
Atmospheric is an understatement here, this film is an experience, a fully immersive experience that will leave you breathless from beginning to end. George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman are fantastic as the two soldiers who have been thrown together on what can only be described, upon first look, as a suicide mission. Their bravery and loyalty throughout the film is both inspiring and so deeply moving, I actually cried a couple of times when I saw this at the cinema. And considering that the camera stays with the two soldiers from the very first frame to the last, as if unfolding in one long take, you feel like you are actually right along side of them, on this very treacherous ride, all of the way to the very end.
1917 is staggeringly good and completely unmissable, and probably the best war movie that I have ever seen.

LITTLE WOMEN
Release Date: 2019
Rating: G
Running Time: 135 mins
Written and directed by Greta Gerwig, this seventh film adaption of the 1868 novel of the same name by Louisa May Alcott is the most perfectly delightful and beautifully realised version of the story that has ever graced the big screen. Gerwig has delivered this tale with a deep sensitivity and a truly artistic eye, and has created a timeless retell that is not only visually pleasing but also emotionally affecting in all of the right ways.
Jo, Meg, Amy and Beth March are four talented sisters growing up in Massachusetts in the years following the end of The Civil War. As the girls come of age, they seperate to pursuit their own dreams and life choices. The girls reunite when the youngest of the four sisters Beth falls ill. Jo, the writer of the family, reflects and ruminates on their formative years.
Little Women is so perfectly cast; Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh and Eliza Scanlen bring a believable sibling energy and shared experience to this movie that is completely infectious. Timothee Chalamet is, as always, heartbreakingly handsome and completely on point, and everyone is well supported by veteran heavyweights Laura Dern and Meryl Streep.
Little Women is a perfectly acted and executed film and I absolutely loved it! I just could not fault anything about it, it's perfect from start to end. So, it's off to the Hall of Fame for this gem, which was definitely my favourite film of 2019.
FINAL SAY: It's like a tide going out. It goes out slowly, but it can't be stopped.

Release Date: 2019

Running Time: 182 mins
The epic Avengers movie series comes to an end, and wow, does it ever go out with a bang! This finale episode ties everything together from all of the previous Marvel movies, providing an exciting and quite emotional conclusion to a tale that has had the world eagerly waiting for over six months to discover the outcome. I can assure you, Marvel fans will not be disappointed by this movie, they will love it.
It's been five years since Thanos wiped out 50% of all the living creatures on the planet and the world has since been left in complete despair. The few remaining Avengers regroup in an attempt to outwit Thanos and restore life to the world.
Any character that has made an appearance in any of the previous Marvel movies gets a look in here, it is a literal who's who of the Marvel superhero hall of fame. Chris Hemsworth completely steals the show with his slovenly antics as a unkempt version of Thor, and Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner and Robert Downey Jr showcase their acting talents with their emotionally engaging performances that are sure to bring a tear to your eye. However, to be fair, everyone is really solid here and bringing their best to this fitting and satisfying Avengers conclusion.
The storyline is creative, engaging and exceptionally clever; Marvel were clearly thinking about Avengers: Endgame decades ago and the way that it all comes together is truly awe inspiring. I don't want to give anything away, but this is a truly terrific superhero viewing, second to none and an absolute must see Avengers experience to end them all.
FINAL SAY: A perfect and touching end to an epic 'super' saga.

PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE
Release Date: 2019
Rating: M
Running Time: 122 mins
Every now and then, if you're lucky, you will happen upon a movie that is so enchanting and so beautiful that every frame feels like a piece of art, Portrait of a Lady on Fire is that movie. When it comes to romance, passion, adoration and fascination this historical French language film wins on all fronts, delivering something that is not only deeply contemplative but visually stunning as well.
Marianne, a painter, is commissioned to paint a portrait of a troubled young woman named Heloise. Heloise's mother has been unsuccessful in getting her to pose for paintings and encourages Marianne to act as a hired companion to try and keep her portrait painting a secret. It is not long before Marianne becomes enchanted with Heloise, who is betrothed to another and the two women begin a controversial love affair.
If you are looking for something that captures the subtilties and beauty of affection and love then this slow burning romance will sweep you away completely. It certainly swept me away, I was deeply moved by this film and really loved how powerful it made the simple act of observing another person.
Noemie Merlant and Adele Haenel are unforgettably gorgeous as the two intertwined women and they are well supported by Valeria Golino and Luana Bajrami who portrays another convincingly troubled character named Sophie. The film depicts women in various states of joy and peril and it is all delivered perfectly through the poised eye of director Celine Sciamma. This is truly unforgettable film.

THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI
Release Date: 2017
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 115 mins
A black comedy/ crime drama written, produced and directed by Martin McDonagh that won the Best Motion Picture - Drama award at the 75th Golden Globes, as well as Best Actress - Drama for Frances McDormand and Best Supporting Actor for Sam Rockwell. McDormand and Rockwell also scored Oscars for their incredible acting efforts in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri at the 90th Academy Award Ceremony, galvanizing the fact that this is probably one of the best acted movies that we have seen for quite some time.
A mother (McDormand) who feels that the local police have failed in finding a suspect for her daughter's brutal rape and murder takes matters into her own hands by hiring three billboards outside of town to post her concerns on. A series of events is set into motion and the small town of Ebbing gets a long needed shake up.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri treads a fine line between black humour and razor sharp drama perfectly, I laughed and I cried, and I actually cared about the outcomes for the characters as I was watching. This was mostly due to the fact the acting was absolutely incredible, with Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson giving the best performances of their careers thus far. This is really high quality drama; the storyline is thoroughly intriguing, the pace is excellent and the outcomes are totally plausible, it's a definite 'must see' movie experience, don't miss it!

KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS
Release Date: 2016
Rating: PG
Running Time: 101 mins
A magical and beautifully constructed movie from Laika, the same company that produced Coraline and ParaNorman. Directed by newcomer Travis Knight, this is truly enchanting and entertaining viewing. The stop motion animation is just dazzling and the heart felt story line is touching without being sappy.
Young Kubo must find three magical pieces of armor to stand any chance of defeating the evil Moon King, Raiden. With the help of a grumpy monkey and a beetle that has no memory recall, he must conquer his fears, uncover the much needed power items and also discover the truth about how things came to be the way that they are.
Like all good adventure tales, there are three main tasks to be conquered before the final showdown can begin, and here they play out to perfection. Strong voice performances are delivered by Charlize Theron, Matthew McConaughey, Ralph Fiennes, Rooney Mara, George Takei and Art Parkinson as Kubo.
This is the type of story telling that I long for in children's cinema; filled to the brim with fantasy, overflowing with self discovery and the overall visual experience is second to none. This is a wondrously executed piece, and an absolute must see cinematic experience, don't miss this gem.

MANCHESTER BY THE SEA
Release Date: 2016
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 137 mins
My favourite drama of 2016, and an incredibly moving story that made me reach for the box of tissues on more than one occasion. This movie felt so real to me, that after it ended, I just wanted more. The characters in Manchester by the Sea are so good and so completely fleshed out that you really feel like you are a part of the process. Written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan, this film is incredibly good and gets a well deserved Hall of Fame - 5 Chili Peppers from me.
When Lee Chandler's brother suddenly passes away he finds himself thrust back into the community of Manchester. He learns that he is expected to become guardian to his brother's teenage son, but the ghosts of his past have made him bitter, isolated and unable to cope with responsibility.
Casey Affleck is absolutely astounding as Lee Chandler, portraying the grief stricken loner with heartbreaking sincerity. It was a real shame that Affleck's Best Actor Oscar win for Manchester by the Sea was marred by controversy in regards to Affleck's inappropriate behaviours, because we now all know him as 'that talented creep.'
However, it must be said that the film is not Affleck's alone, and there are so many other reasons to love this film. Firstly, for the incredible and beautiful writing and directing from Lonergan, secondly for the amazing supporting cast especially Michelle Williams who doesn't get nearly enough screen time and lastly for the overall experience of this film. This movie is an experience, a deep and emotional one that you won't forget quickly.

FINAL SAY: I can't beat it. I can't beat it. I'm sorry.

YOUTH
Release Date: 2015
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 124 mins
A magnificent and mindfully meditative film from writer and director Paolo Sorrentino. This is most certainly not a film that is going to appeal to the masses, in fact, I did consider placing onto the art house list because there is nothing conventional or mainstream about this film. Youth is designed for people who like to ponder even the most mundane of things, but it is all presented in the most tender of ways.
A retired composer and conductor (Michael Caine) and his long time, film director, friend (Harvey Keitel) take in some rest and relaxation at a wellness retreat in the Alps. Against the sprawling landscape and sumptuous surroundings, the two older men contemplate their lives, the lives of their children and the inspirations of the young, as they encounter all manner of guests at the retreat.
This film is truly a symphony of the most beautiful scenery, music and relationships, woven together masterfully to leave you overwhelmed with emotion and pondering for days after. Bravo Sorrentino, bravo indeed!
FINAL SAY: We are all extras. All we have is emotions.

INTERSTELLAR
Release Date: 2014
Rating: M
Running Time: 169 mins
Christopher Nolan's finest offering to date, and a very fine example of excellent science fiction story telling. Using revolutionary filming techniques and effects, Interstellar won the Best Visual Effects Academy Award in 2014 and mesmerized audiences with its depiction of a post apocalyptic future that requires the assistance of space exploration to find another planet for the human race to recolonize.
The Earth is rapidly becoming uninhabitable, so a NASA physicist, Professor Brand (Michael Caine) formulates a plan to save mankind by finding a new home across the galaxy. To do this, he enlists the help of Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), a former NASA pilot and three researchers, and sends them on an incredibly dangerous mission that requires them to journey through a wormhole to find possible salvation in one of the three planets that exist on the other side. Cooper must leave his two dependent children in the hands of his aging father to participate in a mission that could possibly save the life of all of humanity.
This is an incredible watch, the space scenes are utterly gripping and beautiful, the story line is sentimental but not sappy and the acting is amazing. McConaughey is brilliant as Cooper, the self sacrificing and homesick father, Hathaway is bringing her best as Brand, Caine is as good as he always is, and Jessica Chastain and Casey Affleck deliver perfectly as Cooper's adult children.
Interstellar had me hooked at the five minute mark, it is a beautifully put together piece of cinema that is just as much about sacrifice and love as it is about space exploration. One of the best science fiction offerings that I have seen in years.
FINAL SAY: Do not go quietly into that good night.

THE GREAT BEAUTY (LA GRANDE BELLEZZA)
Release Date: 2013
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 142 mins
An Italian art drama co-written and directed by Paolo Sorrentino and filmed exclusively in Rome. After premiering at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, The Great Beauty went on to win the Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards and also at the BAFTA's.
When socialite and 'Party King' Jep Gambardella turns 65, he begins to reflect on the meaning of his life. Through a series of eccentric, romantic and artistic interludes throughout Rome, Jep attempts to define what benefit he has gained from his opulent and privileged lifestyle.
This movie is a powerhouse of pure pleasure. The music, the streetscapes, the cinematography and the dialogue are all married together to create something altogether ravishing, meditative and somewhat otherworldly. In many ways The Great Beauty is a story about one man's love affair with Rome, with life, with finding reason and with beauty in all of its forms.
I found it completely mesmerising and intensely satisfying. This is nothing short of a masterpiece and it is an unmissable slice of cinematic brilliance.

SINISTER
Release Date: 2012
Rating: R 18+
Running Time: 110 mins
There are not a lot of movies that really scare me anymore, perhaps I am just getting jaded or even worse desensitized to a lot of the thrills and chills that the horror industry dishes out. However, for the first time in about 20 years I actually got a decent fright, one that made me squeal a little and made my pulse quicken. Yes, this is a scary movie, and that is why Sinister is on the Hall of Fame list and not just in the horror section.
Sinister tells the story of a true-crime writer that moves his family into a house where a grisly incident took place some years ago. He keeps this information to himself believing that living at the scene of the crime will assist him with his research for his newest novel. He uncovers a cache of 8mm films in the attic that show a string of other horrific family murders dating back to the 1960's, suggesting that this is the work of a serial killer.
Sinister is a creepy flick that will have you on the edge of your seat. Ethan Hawke portrays the confused and intrigued writer perfectly, and his character is clearly more fleshed out than the ones that we usually see in horror, which certainly adds to the overall merit of the movie.

MUD
Release Date: 2012
Rating: M
Running Time: 130 mins
This movie hailed the beginning of the McConaissance, which was basically the re-invention of Matthew McConaughey from ridiculous rom-com love interest roles into a string of highly reputable and successful films.
Mud is a film about love, but there is nothing cheesy about this movie; it is a charming and rich tale exploring the many facets of love through the eyes of men.
The story takes place on the Mississippi River and revolves around two small town teens that meet a mysterious drifter, on the run from the law, named Mud. The boys try to help Mud reunite with his lost love, whilst going through their own rites of passage.
Tye Sheridan and Jacob Lofland are amazing as the troubled teens, Reese Witherspoon is at her best and Michael Shannon has a small yet meaningful role. But Matthew McConaughey is the heartbeat of this movie, encapsulating every element of Mud with a perfection that we have since come to expect from him.
FINAL SAY: Mississippi Mud sure is delicious.

THE DESCENDANTS
Release Date: 2011
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 115 mins
I didn't think that Alexander Payne would be able to top Sideways, but here is the proof, deservingly taking the Oscar for best writing. The Descendants is one of the best father-daughter flicks to date. There is a heartfelt reality to be found here and a gamut of emotions to explore.
The story revolves around Matt King, the workaholic and estranged father, who tries to reconnect with his somewhat rambunctious daughters when his ex-wife is placed into a coma. As they all become reacquainted, secrets are revealed and their perceptions of each other are altered.
This is a deeply emotional movie, exploring matters of commitment, tradition and expectation in an endearing and realistic way. Shot in Hawaii, this movie also has a unique and fresh perspective, nothing glossy and Hollywood going on here.
The real heart and soul of this movie is undoubtedly George Clooney, who should have won an Oscar for his portrayal of Matt. This is the best I have ever seen Clooney and easily the most enjoyable; emotional instability is something that he can really deliver well.

MELANCHOLIA
Release Date: 2011
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 136 mins
This Lars von Trier offering is a triumph of cinema. This movie haunted me, it spoke to me and really attacked my senses with its depiction of the last few days on Earth proceeding an apocalyptic event. Divided into two separate chapters involving two sisters, this movie has distinctly polar perspectives, it is almost as if two people directed it.
The first chapter is mostly focused on Justine, the obviously emotionally challenged young bride on her wedding day. We watch as she falls further and further away from the line of normal, torturing her conventional sister and groom with her grim outlook and depressive mood swings.
The second chapter focuses head on into the impending doom, and we get to see the way that people react when there is nothing left but inevitable obliteration. The sister roles are portrayed brilliantly by Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg who both physically embody all of the despondency, depression and doom that this film dishes out. This is a slick movie for people that like to think about what they are watching.
FINAL SAY: The end never looked so good.

INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS

Rating: R 18+
Running Time: 153 mins
Once Upon a Time....in Nazi-Occupied France; a plan to assassinate Nazi leaders by a group of Jewish U.S. soldiers coincides with a theatre owner's vengeful plans for the same.
A Tarantino powerhouse of cinema! His very best offering to date, and proof to us all that he has seriously evolved as a director. This is mature and well thought out, as funny as it is violent; and it just makes for really exciting viewing.
The characters are insanely over the top, as we've come to expect from Tarantino, and every bit as blood-thirsty; but there is also a level of 'not taking itself too seriously' about this movie that makes it really fun to watch.
Christoph Waltz is incredible as Col. Hans Landa - aka The Jew Hunter; making the mere drinking of a cup of milk horrifyingly threatening. Brad Pitt does a great job as the leader of the Basterds, Eli Roth is every bit the creepy 'batter up' as The Bear Jew and Melanie Laurent is a convincing Shosanna. Notable supports from Diane Kruger and Michael Fassbender rounds the cast out well. Step back to 1941 for a fresh perspective on World War 2, you won't be disappointed.

Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 112 mins
This is a sophisticated science fiction undertaking from Neill Blomkamp. Set in the harsh slums of South Africa, this powerful and original piece rises well above the mediocrity of typical sci-fi and ascends straight in the Hall of Fame. The mockumentary style used here is a real plus, and the political and racial undertones are impossible to ignore; this movie has a voice.
Set in the not too distant future, humans and aliens have made contact and are living in co-habitation. The aliens , or prawns for slang, are quarantined and live in slum-like conditions in Johannesburg; this is where their spacecraft haulted over 20 years ago. Through an unfortunate incident on a routine check, a government agent (Wikus) becomes exposed to some alien biotechnology and soon becomes a kindred spirit to their plight.
This film is something new and gritty, as charming as it is disturbing.

I knew absolutely nothing about this movie when I watched it, and it completely blew my mind. This is the quintessential character development movie of all time. In my opinion, Sam Rockwell should have got an Oscar for his role as astronaut Sam Bell. I do know that Duncan Jones won a BAFTA for Outstanding Debut in Directing, but generally I think that this is an underrated movie that didn't get the attention that it deserved.
Without giving too much away, it is basically about an astronaut that has been on the moon for three years, alone with his computer companion GERTY. Sam's job is to harvest and send parcels of the moon resource - helium 3, back to Earth to help diminish our power problems.
The less you know about this movie, the better. Just watch it.

When Mr Fox (voiced perfectly by George Clooney) decides to take on a group of farmers (Boggis, Bunce and Beans) for stocks and supplies, he ends up in all kinds of bother. Eventually, Mr Fox must call on the support of his own community in this showdown of wit and cunning.
This is smart and fresh film-making, and it is worthy of an adult audience just as much as a child's.

Don't get sucked into thinking that you need to like wrestling to watch this movie, you'll be doing yourself a huge disservice. Darren Aronofsky should've gotten more Oscar attention from this movie and not Black Swan two years later, that's all I'm going to say about that.
This movie is centred around the life of Randy 'The Ram" Robinson. Randy has reached the twilight of his career and must try to assimilate back into society and piece together some semblance of a life from the ashes of his past. It's hard to watch this lonely story unfold.
This is a role that was made for Rourke, he has clearly poured his heart into the character of Randy and seems to flesh him out like no-one else could, easily the highlight of his acting career to date.

THERE WILL BE BLOOD
Release Date: 2007
Rating: M
Running Time: 158 mins
Inspired by Upton Sinclair's novel Oil!, There Will Be Blood is a film that everyone should see at least once. After premiering at the Berlin International Film Festival, where Paul Thomas Anderson won the Silver Bear Award for Best Director, the movie continued to gain attention and momentum, receiving significant critical praise.
Daniel Day Lewis won the Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, NYFCC and IFTA Best Actors awards for his riveting performance and truly galvanized his position as one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation.
Daniel Plainview (Day Lewis) is an oil prospector who travels to California to seek his fortune in black gold. Using coercion and manipulation, Plainview manages to gain a stranglehold on the entire oil rich area which comes at the cost of his family, his religion and his own sanity.
Fueled with high tension and visceral intimidation, this movie is a sensory masterpiece. The landscapes, the oil fields, the gritty details from the sweat stains on Plainview's hat to the muck on the worker's brows, this movie has a certain edge that serious movie goers long for.
Daniel Plainview could easily be one of the most sinister characters to have ever graced the big screen, and Daniel Day Lewis portrays him flawlessly. Paul Dano brings his best as the twins Paul and Eli Sunday, as does Dillon Freasier as the Young HW, but essentially everyone is completely eclipsed by the hideously overpowering energy of Daniel Plainview. Everything here is about power and it plays out in the most mesmerising and disturbing of ways, it's absolutely unmissable.

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
Release Date: 2007
Rating: R 18+
Running Time: 122 mins
Ethan and Joel Cohen rise to the highest of heights with this gripping and intense western drama. Based on the novel by Cormac McCarthy (author of The Road), this is a frighteningly bleak movie. Filmed mostly in the desert and having virtually no soundtrack, apart from a mere 16 mins total of ambient music, this film creates a haunting atmosphere that will have you entranced.
A hunter (Josh Brolin) stumbles upon two million dollars in cash - the remnants of a drug deal gone sour; which he takes. A creepy hired hit-man named Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) is looking to recover the money, however Anton also happens to be a pretty twisted psychopath, which makes things a little more complicated. Add in a Sheriff (Tommy Lee Jones) that is trying to find both men, and you have yourself an excellent cat and mouse movie full of plot twists and intrigue.
Javier Bardem is so evil in this movie, it's terrifying. Every time he is on screen you just know its going to be bad, but you are never sure of how far he will take it. Brolin and Lee Jones are equally fabulous; and Woody Harrelson is genuinely good in his small but significant role as Carson Wells.

SUPERBAD
Release Date: 2007
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 113 mins
Finally a coming of age movie about male teens that doesn't focus on gratuitous titty shots and teens getting molested by cougar mothers. This movie depicts all of the typical teen turmoils with all of the awkwardness that comes with them. It is laugh out loud cringe-humour and you just can't help but feel 'superbad' for these desperate teens.
Jonah Hill and Michael Cera are in their early days and play the hopeless best friends with much wit and naivety. They are crass and yet adorably innocent all at once. Essentially, this is a coming of age movie that is more about separation anxiety and co-dependence than tits and ass, so hooray for that!

CASINO ROYALE

Running Time: 144 mins
Martin Campbell has completely resurrected the James Bond series from the ashes; Agent 007 is back and finally being portrayed in the truest interpretation I have ever seen. This movie oozes style and sophistication, it is fast paced, energetic and beautifully shot in every respect.
It's a die hard Bond fan's wet dream, and probably many women's too with Daniel Craig fleshing out his role with tonnes of manly charisma and just enough ruggedness to make the ladies swoon. He's a man's man and ladies man, just as Bond should be.
In Casino Royale we see Bond attempting to take down a weapons dealer in a high stakes game of poker, but in true Bond style, things are never as they seem and we find ourselves riding out the plot twists and all of the espionage that makes these stories so thrilling.
Eva Green is stunningly beautiful as Bond's love interest and Judi Dench makes a mighty fine M. This installment was so superior in every way that the following efforts just couldn't shine so brightly in my opinion, it is sophisticated cinema at its best.

BABEL
Release Date: 2006
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 143 mins
This film has four seemingly unrelated stories running along side of one another, however as the movie advances, the stories become interlocked and connected, telling one complete tale.
Everything begins with one bullet. A bullet that is fired at a bus tour group, travelling through Morocco. The implications from this bullet are so vast that the ripples carry out across the globe, affecting people in America, Mexico and Japan.
This is spellbinding drama, with multifaceted story lines and passionate performances. The cast is utterly massive, the different locations are stunning and the entire movie will have you shifting in your seat from emotional overload.
Cate Blanchett and Brad Pitt rise to the occasion, making an extremely convincing couple and Gael Garcia Bernal is as strong as ever in his Mexican douche-bag role. There is lot going on in this movie, and its complexity is what makes it so damn good.

THE FALL
Release Date: 2006

Running Time: 117 mins
The Fall is probably one of the most visually pleasing movies that I have ever had the joy to encounter. Every frame is a feast for the eyes. The landscapes, the costumes, the backdrops and the soundtrack are stunning in every way, it's a true masterpiece offering from Tarsem Singh.
Set in the 1920's, an injured stuntman struggling with his pain and inactivity befriends a small girl with a broken arm. Together they find common ground in the boredom of the hospital and the love of a great story.
The movie flashes backwards and forwards between the real world and the fantasy world that the unlikely couple create together and it is delightfully engaging.
Lee Pace is a absolute vision as the Stuntman/Red Bandit and Catinca Untaru will melt your heart as Alexandria. This is unmissable stuff!

PAN'S LABYRINTH
Release Date: 2006
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 118 mins
Easily Guillermo Del Toro's best offering to date and a mighty fine fantasy story. This movie crossed so many genres I barely knew where to put it, luckily it was superior enough to get into the Hall of Fame and save me the trouble.
This is an enchanting story about a girl who escapes into a fantasy world to help her endure her sadistical step-father. Set in the 1940's during the Spanish civil war, this is both a beautiful and a dark movie, with an almost Alice in Wonderland homage at play.
The Pan creature, Fauno gives our heroine Ophelia a set of tasks to complete that force her to face her deepest fears.
This is both a terrifying and triumphant fairy tale that will enchant and disturb you from start to end.
Please do yourself a favour and don't get the dubbed version of this film, having seen both I can assure you that the subtitled version shits all over the dubbed one.
FINAL SAY: Get lost in the labyrinth, a fairy-tale like no other.

ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND
Release Date: 2004
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 108 mins
This is my favourite romance movie of all time. Crossing into the sci-fi genre and running with two story lines simultaneously, this movie, directed by Michel Gondry, is guaranteed to tug at your heart strings.
The script was penned by Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich and Adaptation) making the dialogue fresh and intelligent and the story line original in every way.
Joel and Clementine are struggling in their relationship and decide to have a procedure that will erase each other from their memories. However, in trying to lose each other, they discover the true nature of what they had in the first place.
This was a break out role for Jim Carrey proving to the world that he is not merely a slapstick comedy actor, and Kate Winslet is as captivating as ever alongside of him. A star-studded ensemble fill all of the supporting roles including Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo and Elijah Wood.

Sofia Coppola has a wonderful eye for portraying men as kind, gentle and genuinely responsible and reliable. If only we got more of that and less of the misogynistic bullshit that we are constantly fed about men in cinema.
This is a beautiful film about being away from home, suffering from culture clash and finding comfort in strangers.
The characters are extremely believable and wonderfully portrayed by Scarlett Johannson as the lonely young wife and Bill Murray as the faded movie star. Their growing friendship and affection for each other is executed with taste and delight, its almost magical in a sense as they unfold with candid honesty about their thoughts on marriage and life.

It was inevitable that LOTR was going to end up on my Hall of Fame list, it encompasses everything I adore about storytelling and cinema. Take a book written by J.R.R Tolkien and then let Peter Jackson direct it and create an epic fantasy trilogy using state of the art CGI and finally cast lots of sexy men in the lead roles. Okay, you had me at Tolkien!
If you have been dead for the last decade, let me walk you through it. Set in the fictional and extremely magical world of Middle Earth, a group of delightful creatures called Hobbits are on a quest to return an extremely powerful and sinister ring back to where it was first forged so that the evil within it can finally be put to rest. Easier said than done really. Let me put it to you this way, there are three movies and they're all very, very long.
But these are not just movies, they are sweeping sagas. They are made with great attention to every detail, making them completely enchanting. You are immersed into Middle Earth as you watch, these movies are so thrilling and action packed that you cannot help being swept away. All genres are crossed, there's a bevy of characters to sate everyone's tastes and the story is intelligent, imaginative and utterly captivating.
If you haven't seen these movies yet, do yourself a favour, the final instalment deservingly won 11 Oscars including best picture. Get on board, cheer for Frodo and Sam, scowl at Sauron, fall for Aragon, laugh with Gimli, be enchanted by Legolas and get some sage advice from Gandalf.

SNATCH
Release Date: 2000
Rating: R 18+
Running Time: 102 mins
Before Guy Ritchie sold his soul (and integrity) and married Madonna; he was making really great movies like this one. Following in the success of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, we are again thrown into a world of British thuggery and small time gangsters in Snatch.
Turkish (Jason Statham) and his best friend Tommy get pulled into organizing a fight for the psychotic gangster Brick Top. When the fight goes wrong, the boys soon become involved with the Pikeys and Mikey (Brad Pitt) who just wants a caravan for his ma. Now throw in some British thugs, a bullet-dodging Russian hit-man, a Jewish jewel thief with four fingers, some amateur robbers with a hungry dog and a priceless stolen diamond; and you've got the makings of one giant fuck-up.
Yep, it's bloody complicated and hysterically funny to watch the dramatics unfold. This is clever story telling, lots of action and a heap of things happening simultaneously. Not hard to follow, but you do need to pay attention or you'll miss all of the little loops and cross overs as the different plot lines collide.

THE MATRIX
Release Date: 1999
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 136 mins
I recall the day that I went to see this movie clearly. I left the cinema with such excitement and I just felt cooler for having witnessed this extraordinary feat of cinematic brilliance. This is a Science Fiction fan's dream-movie and was the first film to use many of the CGI effects that so many movies hang their hats upon these days. It was ground-breaking; and it has an element of cool that cannot be denied.
Neo (Keanu Reeves) is a computer hacker that is approached by a mysterious group of rebels that appear to have 'out of this world' powers and vital information about the true state of the world. After an 'Alice like' introduction to the real world, Neo learns that he has an important role to play in the battle for Earth and a lot to learn about the real state of affairs.
Unfortunately, the following two installments could not keep up the pace of this first, and only great Matrix offering. The soundtrack to this film is kick-ass and really adds to the urgency and darkness of the movie. It's smooth and filled to the brim with mysterious characters and has loads and loads of action.

In the not- too-distant future genetic enhancement is everywhere. It is used to remove disease and eradicate imperfections. Wealthy parents can even ensure that their children will be the perfect human specimen from the point of inception. Only the genetically elite get to work in prestigious and intergalactic employment, and those deemed less suitable must complete the menial tasks.
Ethan Hawke plays Vincent, a man desperate to travel to the stars, but unable to due to his genetic restrictions. Vincent devises a plan to deceive the DNA testing in order to fulfill his dreams of becoming something more.
This movie is sophisticated Sci Fi that is driven by character development not effects. It's slick and it's smart and everyone should see it.

CASINO

Running Time: 178 mins
If you haven't already seen this movie, go out and rent it as soon as you can. Martin Scorsese's Casino is a piece of cinematic brilliance that I believe was his most ambitious, and easily his most underrated, body of work to date.
Spanning three decades, Casino chronicles the true story of a faction of the mob that ran the Las Vegas casinos. We get to see all of the greed, scandal and dirty tactics that went on behind the scenes at the casinos, but we also bear witness to all of the revolting dramatics that occurred in their obviously strained private lives.
This is a complex movie showcasing the absolute best of Robert De Niro as smooth talking Sam "Ace" Rothstein. This was a role De Niro was born to play, and he does it perfectly. Sharon Stone deserved the Oscar for her flawless portrayal of Ginger, and Joe Pesci is terrifyingly psychotic as Nicky Santoro.

ROSEMARY'S BABY
Release Date: 1968
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 136 mins
A truly brilliant psychological horror from Roman Polanski. Rosemary's Baby is a modern gothic tale, dark and mysterious and set in hip 1960's Manhattan; this is a film that will get you thinking and leave you thinking long after the credits have rolled.
Rosemary and husband Guy are expecting their first child and have just moved into a new apartment. They are quickly befriended by an enthusiastic elderly couple who also live in the building, Roman and Minnie. However, Rosemary soon becomes suspicious of their motivations and what follows is a series of eerie interludes and states of increasing paranoia.
This is thinking man's horror, subtle and disturbing in every way. Unlike so many horror films of the 60's and 70's, this film is not reliant on anything crass or cheap, there is a sophistication in its insidious tone that horror films struggle to match even today.
Mia Farrow is very convincing as Rosemary, her slight frame making her an even more vulnerable target. And Ruth Gordon steals the show as the fast talking oldie Minnie. Not just for horror fans, Rosemary's Baby is worthy cinema for all.
