This is such a beautiful examination of matters of the heart and the things that draw people together and then apart again. I loved this film, it looks and feels amazing and I was completely swept away when I watched it. Greta Lee, Teo Yoo and John Magaro are incredible here, in what is certainly the best romance offering of 2023.

WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING
Release Date: 2022
Rating: M
Running Time: 125 mins
An American mystery, drama/romance, based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Delia Owens. I was a huge fan of the book and was very much looking forward to seeing how director Olivia Newman was going to interpret the material, and although admittedly this isn't as good as the novel (as films generally are not) this was still an engaging and genuinely touching story involving a love triangle and an unresolved murder.
Abandoned wildling girl Kya has spent her entire life in the North Carolina marshlands. Now an adult and a naturalist, she is still harshly ostracized by her community and forced to manage alone. She becomes the prime suspect in a murder case when a popular local quarterback turns up dead after secret colluding with her in the wilds.
Daisy Edgar -Jones is terrific as the headstrong, independent spirit Kya; she does an amazing job of embodying all of the innocence, intelligence and beauty of Kya's character perfectly, and the rest of the cast deliver well upon the premise of the story as well. Sure, Where the Crawdads Sing is a bit cheesy and melodramatic at times, and that's probably why critics slammed it as hard as they did, but it is also endearing and delivers just enough of the right notes to make it a winner in my books.
FINAL SAY: Then there was the small matter of surviving.

I WANT YOU BACK
Release Date: 2022
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 111 mins
A romantic comedy directed by Jason Orley from a screenplay written by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger that actually delivers just the right mix of rom/com to work.
Two recently dumped strangers team up in attempt to win back their exes through unscrupulous and underhanded methods.
The storyline here is simple enough, but the cast are truly terrific and deliver their roles with tonnes of humour and likeability which really elevates this rom/com from predictable and basic to the halls of genuine enjoyment.
Charlie Day and Jenny Slate play the roles of the two devious and heartbroken friends with a plausible onscreen chemistry and they are very well supported by Scott Eastwood, Manny Jacinto, Clark Backo and Gina Rodriguez whom all believably fall into the messy love entanglement that ensues.
I Want You Back is no game changer, but for a rom/com this is a solid and enjoyable watch.

PALM SPRINGS
Release Date: 2020
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 90 mins
With a big nod to Groundhog Day, this modern take on the time travel/romance genre delivers an unexpectedly sweet and enjoyable ride. Directed by Max Barbakow and written by Andy Siara, Palm Springs dives just far enough in to the time loop idea to keep you interested without becoming too convoluted or complicated.
At her sister's wedding reception, maid of honour Sarah (Cristin Milioti) hooks up with Nyles (Andy Samberg) after he rescues her from an awkward wedding speech. However, it is not until Sarah wakes up the next morning that it becomes clear that something extremely unusual has happened.
Palm Springs is certainly not a game changer, but it is also not a total waste of time either (pardon the pun). The onscreen chemistry between Milioti and Samberg is actually quite plausible and helps the film to gain some levity along the way and the two seem genuinely at ease with each other as they navigate their new situation.
Andy Samberg is actually good as the obnoxious and drunken character Nyles and it was really good to see him doing something that wasn't just completely cheesy and throw away for a change. With some solid acting support from J.K. Simmons and Meredith Hagner, in the end, this film comes together in a quite enjoyable way.
FINAL SAY: I would rather die with you, than live in a world without you.

PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE
Release Date: 2019
Rating: M
Running Time: 122 mins
Every now and then, if you're lucky, you will happen upon a movie that is so enchanting and so beautiful that every frame feels like a piece of art, Portrait of a Lady on Fire is that movie. When it comes to romance, passion, adoration and fascination this historical French language film wins on all fronts, delivering something that is not only deeply contemplative but visually stunning as well.
Marianne, a painter, is commissioned to paint a portrait of a troubled young woman named Heloise. Heloise's mother has been unsuccessful in getting her to pose for paintings and encourages Marianne to act as a hired companion to try and keep her portrait painting a secret. It is not long before Marianne becomes enchanted with Heloise, who is betrothed to another and the two women begin a controversial love affair.
If you are looking for something that captures the subtilties and beauty of affection and love then this slow burning romance will sweep you away completely. It certainly swept me away, I was deeply moved by this film and really loved how powerful it made the simple act of observing another person.
Noemie Merlant and Adele Haenel are unforgettably gorgeous as the two intertwined women and they are well supported by Valeria Golino and Luana Bajrami who portrays another convincingly troubled character named Sophie. The film depicts women in various states of joy and peril and it is all delivered perfectly through the poised eye of director Celine Sciamma. This is truly unforgettable film.

YESTERDAY
Release Date: 2019
Rating: M
Running Time: 116 mins
A romantic comedy directed by Danny Boyle and written by Richard Curtis that delivers a wholesome, simple and palatable love story about an alternate reality where certain aspects of everyday life that we all know about are missing.
A struggling musician is hit by a bus one evening when a mysterious global blackout occurs. When he comes around, he learns that this new reality is altered in small but not insignificant ways. An opportunity to improve his musical career ensues when he realises that no-one in the world has heard any of The Beatles large repertoire of songs yet, so he seizes the chance to get famous fast, but of course it all comes at a cost.
The story line is simple, but it is also sweet, mainly because of Himel Patel and Lily James whom are both completely darling in this. The Beatles music always adds to any great soundtrack, and as you would imagine (no pun intended) there are loads of their greatests hits here to enjoy. Joel Fry, Kate McKinnon and surprisingly Ed Sheeran supply some comic relief throughout and although this film isn't a life changer, it is a pleasant romance and an easy watch.

TOP END WEDDING
Release Date: 2019
Rating: M
Running Time: 113 mins
An Australian romantic comedy directed by Wayne Blair and written by Joshua Tyler and Miranda Tapsell , who also stars in the lead female role. I don't think that there has been an Australian movie this honest and meaningful for quite some time and I really enjoyed it. Showcasing some of the most beautiful landscapes Australia has to offer and exploring the beautiful relationship that the indigenous people have with the land and each other, this is a deeply affecting and heart warming watch.
Lauren and Ned are in love and want to tie the knot. Lauren's boss has granted her a 10 day reprieve to have a wedding, but with Lauren's mother MIA somewhere in remote Northern Australia, a wild goose chase ensues as they try to track her down in time for the big event.
This film took a while to warm up for me, at around the half hour mark I was extremely skeptical about whether I was going to even stay awake. However, the last half hour of the film delivers completely, tying everything up in a sweet and sensitive way that delivers with great respect for the people of Tiwi Island.

A STAR IS BORN
Release Date: 2018
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 136 mins
A musical romance and the fourth remake of the 1937 original film of the same name. Produced and directed by Bradley Cooper (in his directorial debut) the movie was actually in production hell for several years as they struggled to cast the roles appropriately. However, when Copper signed on in 2016 to star and direct and Lady Gaga joined on later that year, even they could not have foreseen what a juggernaut A Star is Born would become and how much acclaim it would receive from audiences and critics alike.
Jackson Maine (Cooper) is a famous country singer with a drug and alcohol problem. He happens upon Ally (Lady Gaga) singing in a bar one night and immediately becomes enamored with her. Maine launches Ally's singing career and the two become lovers and a commercial success; but their success is continually overshadowed by Maine's insecurities and his inability to stay sober.
This is a believable and heart felt script about the pitfalls of fame and the challenges of relationships in the spotlight. Cooper and Gaga are truly tremendous together, their onscreen romance seems completely natural and their duets are going to sell millions of albums around the globe. I do expect some Oscar buzz around this movie in the months to come, and for a musical romance it is much more than just watchable, it is thoroughly enjoyable.

CRAZY RICH ASIANS
Release Date: 2018
Rating: M
Running Time: 121 mins
A romance comedy directed by Jon M. Chu and based on Kevin Kwan's 2013 novel of the same name. Crazy Rich Asians explores the age old story of class versus true love and I'm not going to lie, it's hardly a revelation in storytelling. However, what does make it feel fresh and original is the talented Asian-American cast who successfully deliver a modern perspective of their cultural dynamics and strong family traditions.
Rachel and her long term boyfriend Nick set out for Singapore to attend his best friend's wedding. Rachel is launched into the world of the rich and famous when she discovers that Nick is actually an heir to a very wealthy Singaporean empire that is currently being controlled by the strong arm of his overbearing mother.
This movie is visually stunning in every way, the cast are absolutely gorgeous, the costumes are beautiful and the Singaporean surroundings are surreal. Constance Wu and Pierre Png display a wholesome and believable chemistry as the class mismatched lovers, Michelle Yeoh shines as Eleanor Young the dominating mother figure and Awkwafina, Ken Jeong and Nico Santos offer some much needed comic relief throughout.
Crazy Rich Asians is certainly not a life changer, but it's definitely a spot of good fun.

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME
Release Date: 2017
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 132 mins
A coming-of-age romance drama directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by James Ivory. Based on the 2007 novel of the same name by Andre Aciman, Call Me By Your Name was released at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and has since received numerous accolades for its melancholic and powerful portrayal of a first love romance.
In the Summer of 1983 in Lombardy, Italy, 17 year old Elio meets Oliver, an older handsome American that is working for Elio's father. Against the sumptuous sunburnt landscapes of an Italian summer, Elio and Oliver become involved in a passionate love affair that will change both of their lives forever.
This film feels like a foreign language/ art house movie, and perhaps that is what makes it so good. The script never feels like it is conforming to cinematic or societal expectations, it is completely genuine and honest in its portrayal of budding first love discoveries and gay relationships which makes it uniquely forward thinking and exceptionally refreshing.
The 80's era is portrayed perfectly and the two lead actors, Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer, are absolutely flawless as the infatuated lovers. I was so impressed by Chalamet's notable onscreen presence, he will definitely be one to watch in the future and Hammer shows us some serious acting chops that I have not seen before as well.
Call Me By Your Name is nothing short of a modern gay classic and is powerful viewing that shouldn't be missed.

FILM STARS DON'T DIE IN LIVERPOOL
Release Date: 2017
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 105 mins
A touching biographical romance drama directed by Paul McGuigan and based on the memoir of the same name by Peter Turner, which tells of his relationship with the aging Academy Award-winning American actress Gloria Grahame.
In the 1970's, Peter Turner meets and falls in love with an older and extremely controversial Hollywood actress named Gloria Grahame. When she is taken ill, Gloria requests a stay at Peter's home in Liverpool, claiming that she can manage her illness on her own, with Peter and his family for support.
I cannot tell you how refreshing it was to see a plausible and believably romantic on screen relationship between a young man and an older woman. Generally films that have an 'older woman' love dynamic are quite lecherous and inappropriate, but this was genuinely lovely, mutual and quite beautiful in so many ways.
Annette Bening absolutely shines as Gloria Grahame, perfectly portraying all of the golden gorgeousness of a classic cinema starlet and Jamie Bell is roguishly handsome and convincingly enamoured by her throughout; and the two together are memorably delightful. This is terrific and deeply affecting romance tale that shouldn't be missed.

LA LA LAND
Release Date: 2016
Rating: M
Running Time: 128 mins
Retro and modern all at once, this fresh new take on the musical genre had me absolutely enchanted. Written and directed by Damien Chazelle, this film delivers equally in amusement and heartfelt sentiment, and is the best musical/dance offering that I have seen in ages.
An aspiring actress (Emma Stone) and a die hard jazz enthusiast and pianist (Ryan Gosling) fall in love. Together they struggle to make their dreams and ambitions a reality whilst trying to keep their relationship afloat.
Stone and Gosling really get to show off their incredibly believable onscreen dynamic, whilst dancing like Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. This film has a truly dreamy element to it as it echos back to the Golden Age of Hollywood and the flawlessly beautiful old stars of the silver screen. The costumes are impressive, the music enjoyable and the striking play with colour is very exciting.
La La Land has so much heart for such a simple story; I really enjoyed myself and was genuinely touched by this visually delightful romance.

BLUE JAY
Release Date: 2016
Rating: M
Running Time: 85 mins
A realistic drama romance and another unique screenplay from writer, and in this case also lead actor, Mark Duplass. A debut for director Alex Lehmann, this film has a believability that sets it apart from other romance movies, and as a consequence, had me genuinely caring about the main characters. Shot in broody black and white, this dialogue driven tale is a creative dissection of the lifelong effects of a quintessential high school romance.
Former high school sweethearts Jim and Amanda bump into each other at a supermarket after a twenty year hiatus. However, in spite of the years apart, there is still unfinished business between the two of them that unravels over the course of one night together.
Sarah Paulson is absolutely radiant as Amanda, she's just tremendous, and the onscreen chemistry between herself and Mark Duplass is palpable. This is a genuinely intriguing story about reconnecting with aspects of the past in both a nostalgic and beautifully melodramatic way, and I found it intensely interesting.
FINAL SAY: But there is this sadness....and I don't know where it comes from.

MAN UP
Release Date: 2015
Rating: M
Running Time: 88 mins
When it comes to rom-com's, this is more than tolerable, in fact it is down right enjoyable. With a tried and true formula about two wacky thirty-somethings finding themselves on a blind date together, Man Up actually manages to deliver with a good amount of fresh humour and a believable onscreen chemistry between the two main characters.
Nancy (Lake Bell) is mistaken for Jack's (Simon Pegg) blind date, however being a bit tragically desperate and dateless, she just goes with it and decides to see what it leads to.
A terrific cast really lifts the overall feel of this movie, with notable performances from both Bell and Pegg, but also from Olivia Williams and especially Rory Kinnear as the stalker character Sean. This is a feel good rom-com that has everything you want from that genre without any cheesy stooping or over the top gestures of love.
FINAL SAY: Congratulations on your massive pack of lies.

THE AGE OF ADALINE
Release Date: 2015
Rating: M
Running Time: 112 mins
A fantasy romance, directed by Lee Toland Krieger and written by J. Mills Goodloe and Salvador Paskowitz, that was given a bit of an unfair slamming by critics. Sure it's an unlikely story, but it is a fantasy love story, so this is strictly a 'cast aside your realities' type of a romance movie that you can just sit back and enjoy.
After an unprecedented accident in 1937, 28 year old Adaline Bowman finds herself unable to age from that moment forward. Worried that her unusual condition will arouse suspicion, Adaline continues to move around and alter her identity, often sacrificing her own happiness as a result.
I am not generally a Blake Lively fan, but she is undeniably lovely as Adaline, embodying all of the demure quirks and classic good looks that her role demanded. The casting in general is very good here; fabulous support is offered from the always reliably good Ellen Burstyn, and Harrison Ford is probably bringing his best performance in years. Michiel Huisman clearly took a Game of Thrones reprieve to play the handsome and charming modern love interest 'Ellis', which he does convincingly well.
I had a good time with this movie, it is sweet and easy with an interesting premise, it's definitely a worthy romance viewing.

THE ONE I LOVE
Release Date: 2014
Rating: M
Running Time: 91 mins
A quirky psychological romance, directed by Charlie McDowell that premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. The One I Love examines a failing marriage in fresh and unusual ways, delivered with a unique, modern and entertaining flair, this movie took some turns that I was certainly not expecting.
Ethan (Mark Duplass) and Sophie (Elizabeth Moss) have been sent away to a quiet retreat by their therapist in an attempt to reignite their marriage. Things start off pretty well for them in the idyllic surroundings, that is until strange and inexplicable things start to happen in the adjoining guest house that threatens to change them both forever.
Duplass and Moss are excellent together, really pulling together the mystery and intrigue of the tale by being convincingly perplexed and entranced with their new situation. At just over 90 minutes running time, this was an easy and interesting offering that is definitely worth a look.
FINAL SAY: Let's try and recreate the moment.

FADING GIGOLO
Release Date: 2013
Rating: R 18+
Running Time: 90 mins
John Turturro playing a gigolo? Believe it or not, this Woody Allen movie has a certain chemistry that I found utterly irresistible, in fact I even saw Turturro in a whole new light after this viewing.
Murray (Allen) manages to convince his friend Fioravante (Turturro) to try out male prostitution in an attempt to make some money. Reluctant Fioravante ends up having a flair for pleasing ladies, and soon finds his new business venture is booming, that is until he falls for a shy Jewish widow and he becomes torn between his job and a chance at real love.
I am sure that Turturro couldn't believe his good fortune when he landed this role; getting to roll around with a naked Sharon Stone, Sofia Vergara and Vanessa Paradis does seem like most men's dream come true. But aside of the obvious smut that comes with a movie about gigolos, there is something altogether charming and lovely about this film. I found it a worthwhile love story that is hiding a tender message under it's grimy exterior.

WHAT IF
Release Date: 2013
Rating: M
Running Time: 102 mins
An unexpectedly sweet love story from director Michael Dowse that addresses the age old question 'can men and women ever really just be friends?' Unlike other movies that have tackled this topic, this one feels a little more genuine in it's delivery, which could be mostly attributed to the actors - Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan, who really lifted this film out of mediocrity with their combined efforts and talents.
Bubbly animator Chantry and slightly depressed medical school dropout Wallace meet at a party and discover that they have a lot in common. Unfortunately Chantry already has a partner, so the two decide to continue to see each other on a 'friend only' basis, which proves to be difficult since they are clearly meant for each other.
Like I said, not that original in the love-concept department, but so delightfully cute and adorable. This film is chock full of terrific and interesting characters and dialogue is so sharp, fresh and witty that I couldn't help but enjoy myself. It is one of the most adorable romances that I have ever seen and it is definitely worth a look.
FINAL SAY: It's complicated. All this love shit. And that's good. Because if it's too simple you got no reason to try, and if you've got no reason to try you don't.

THE GREAT GATSBY
Release Date: 2013
Rating: M
Running Time: 153 mins
A romantic drama based on the classic novel of the same name by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Written and directed by the king of flair and froufrou Baz Luhrmann, this movie completely polarized critics with it's unique soundtrack, visual styling and lavish costume design. However, if you are a fan of the original novel and are in the mood to see Leonardo DiCaprio stare at Carey Mulligan with the hungriest of hungry eyes, then this movie is definitely for you.
A writer and wall street trader, Nick, finds himself draw into the complicated and confusing world of his new neighbour Jay Gatsby. On the surface Gatsby presents as a millionaire playboy with nothing but time and money to burn, however as Nick gets closer to him he begins to understand that Gatsby is not what, or who, he appears to be.
Like all Luhrmann movies this became a cult classic that was talked about profusely when it was released in 2013. The story, if you don't know it already, is deeply intriguing and devastatingly sad in so many ways and the cast here are doing their utmost to deliver it with flair and in all of it's lush finery.
Leonardo DiCaprio is stunningly handsome as Gatsby and he is extremely well supported by Tobey Maguire playing Nick Carraway, Carey Mulligan portraying Daisy, Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan and Jason Clarke as George Wilson.
Whether you'll think it spectacular or just a speckle, I cannot say for sure, but I certainly found that the almost 2.5 hours of viewing time flew by and I cannot deny that I did enjoy it.
FINAL SAY: I knew it was a great mistake for a man like me to fall in love.

BEGIN AGAIN
Release Date: 2013
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 104 mins
I just a adore a movie that doesn't rely on romantic love alone. We all know that love comes in many and various forms, but rarely do filmmakers explore the realms of platonic love, complicated love dynamics and the love of life, not people. For that reason, Begin Again was a refreshing and intelligent movie about love.
Aspiring musician Gretta (Keira Knightley) is struggling with the recent breakdown of her relationship to rising star Dave (Adam Levine) when she has a chance meeting with a disgraced record label executive called Dan (Mark Ruffalo). Dan convinces Gretta to make an album with him in an attempt to lift both of their damaged lives out of the mire and to celebrate the city of New York.
The music and musical collaborations in this film are just brilliant, and this movie really is just as much about the music as it is about love. Imagine if the films The Commitments and Lost in Translation meshed together, Begin Again would be the offspring of that melding. A delightful and fabulously fun film for the Summer.

LABOR DAY
Release Date: 2013
Rating: M
Running Time: 111 mins
You would not think that a movie that involves an escaped prisoner holding a woman and her son hostage wouldn't make a very convincing love story. But this movie works, it really works. Jason Reitman proves once again that he is an extremely clever director with a firm handle on the way that women tick.
Frank, played by Josh Brolin manages to muster up a perfect combination of rugged, manly usefulness and passionate resourcefulness that all women dream of; this is actually a movie about all of the wonderful things that a man can be. Does a man like this really exist? Doubtful, but not impossible and it was just really nice to watch a man with muscle get so excited about peach pie.
Kate Winslet is likeable as the lonely single mother Adele and Gattlin Griffith is adorable as her teen son struggling with his own coming of age awkwardness. There is lot of subtle beauty in this movie, it's a romance movie that doesn't leave women wishing their husbands were more, but rather celebrating all that they are.

ABOUT TIME
Release Date: 2013
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 123 mins
When 21 year old Tim finds out that he has inherited the unique ability to time travel, he thinks that he has found the answer to all of his troubles. But, there are rules to what Tim can change, and naturally there is cause and effect at play, so getting the girl of his dreams to fall in love with him is not as straightforward as Tim first thought it would be.
This movie is as much a drama as it is a romance, so don't think that you are just going to get some soppy love story out of this. It's witty, charming, clever and incredibly touching in every way, and features a fabulous soundtrack as well. This is clearly another solid piece of work from Richard Curtis (director of Love Actually and 4 Weddings and a Funeral), and arguably his best piece to date.
Rachel McAdams is utterly darling as Tim's love interest Mary, Domhnall Gleeson is extremely likable as Tim and Bill Nighy and Lindsay Duncan round it all out perfectly as Tim's delightful parents.
At the heart of this movie is a deep message about using the time that you have well and embracing every moment, and it spoke volumes to me.

Against the odds and their own kind, they fight to be together; and as their love develops, so does a new discovery that could change the face of the world all over again.
It's the Montague's and the Capulet's all over again, forbidden love and unbridled (albeit undead) passion. This is a quirky and sweet teen romance, complete with longing, discovery and a serious lust for BRAINS!!!
FINAL SAY: An undead Romeo and Juliet.

HER
Release Date: 2013
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 126 mins
It astounds me that Spike Jonze, the same man that wrote the screenplays for the Jackass movies, can also write amazingly emotional films like Where the Wild Things Are and his newest and most triumphant film Her.
Set in an undisclosed future, the story revolves around the life of Theodore, played with exquisite emotional range by Joaquin Phoenix. Theodore is a letter writer that is going through a divorce from his life partner when he purchases an artificially intelligent computer operating system (OS1) for company. But this OS, called Samantha has a consciousness that evolves with every interaction and soon Theodore finds that he has feelings for Samantha that are both powerful and real.
This certainly steps outside of the realms of any love story that I have ever encountered before, but it is beautifully done and incredibly touching despite the fact that you never even see Samantha, only hear her. Scarlett Johansson's sexy voice is perfect for Samantha and this is easily the most pleasing I have see Joaquin Phoenix in a long time.
FINAL SAY: A serious glitch in the system.

SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK
Release Date: 2012
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 122 mins
I really wasn't expecting to like this movie, I thought it was just going to be another fluffy rom-com load of crap, but it was actually really enjoyable and very funny.
Bipolar Pat Solitano (Bradley Cooper) is discharged from a mental institution by his mother, under the condition that he will stay with his parents until he is deemed "well" enough to leave by the authorities. Pat struggles to deal with life at home and the restraining order that his wife Nikki has placed upon him; he forms his own intense exercise regime and silver linings mantra to try and cope. However, when he is introduced to the somewhat unstable character Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), he soon finds himself distracted from his own troubles as he rapidly becomes involved in hers.
Cooper and Lawrence just shine together in this quirky and certainly non-conventional love story about lost people trying to find their way; their onscreen chemistry is believable and they bounce off each other perfectly. This is quite a pleasant and respectable romance movie, with some great laughs and a super strong support cast as well.

SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD
Release Date: 2012
Rating: M
Running Time: 101 mins
A comedy-romance film, written and directed by newcomer Lorene Scafaria, and set in the middle of an apocalyptic event, which seems like a rather unlikely narrative, and it is; but don't be deterred, this film works. Not just because of it's outrageously unusual plot, but mostly because of Steve Carell and Keira Knightley who do a great job to pull it all together with great charm and wit.
An asteroid is going to make contact with earth in three weeks time, and it will be the end of the world as we know it. After his wife flees at the news of impending doom, Dodge (Carell) meets Penny (Knightley) whom has also just separated from a relationship. Desperate to get home to see her family in England, Penny joins Dodge on a trip to his hometown of Delaware in the hope that someone that he knows will be able to get her there.
This was both amusing and terribly sad at the same time, as I was watching I couldn't help but wonder, what would I do if I had just received the same news? Clearly the world has gone bonkers here, as one would expect, but there is a calm calamity to all of the goings on that made this film fun and fresh, and certainly unlike any other apocalyptic movie that I have seen.
FINAL SAY: I thought that somehow we'd save each other.

RUBY SPARKS
Release Date: 2012
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 104 mins
What if you could create your own love, invent someone perfect for you in every way? And what if you could control all of their feelings and reactions, play God and control their free will? What would that love look like?
When struggling novelist Calvin creates Ruby by simply writing about her on his typewriter, his entire life changes. However, Calvin not only wills Ruby into being, he controls everything that she is, he just has to write about what he desires for Ruby to be for it to become a reality.
Zoe Kazan who actually wrote the screenplay, also plays the role of Ruby opposite the very likable Paul Dano, and they have a wonderful on screen chemistry that is really believable.
Obviously this film is wrestling with the moral conundrum of control in relationships, and where one would draw the line if they had total control. It's fresh and beautifully presented, and considering it's context, it surprisingly doesn't deliver in a cheesy way at all. A worthy love story indeed.
FINAL SAY: The morals of inventing love.

Wes Anderson is truly the 'king of quirk', and this fantastic coming-of-age romance is whimsical and delightful in every way. I felt like I could have been watching a retell of Anderson's own early childhood romance, because this movie just felt so awkwardly genuine and deeply reminiscent in every way.
When Sam and Suze fall in love and flee their New England homes to camp out together, it sends various factions of the town into rescue mode and sets a series of events into motion.
With 1960's swinging style and sophistication, two of the most unusual and adorable 12 year old kids you will ever see on screen together, fall in love and pledge their hearts to each other - honestly, this is just so adorable. They're well supported by a kick ass cast boasting the likes of Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Bruce Willis, Frances McDormand and Edward Norton, seriously, how could this film not be a winner? Loved it, just loved it completely, a cult classic for sure.

YOUR SISTER'S SISTER
Release Date: 2011
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 90 mins
Written and directed by Lynn Sheldon, this drama/rom-com has a rather unconventional story line about a bizarre love triangle. I was genuinely mesmerized by this film, the main three characters are fascinating and the story unfolds beautifully, and I adored the dreamy woodland location of the San Juan Islands of Washington State.
Jack (Mark Duplass) is struggling with the recent death of his brother, so his best friend Iris (Emily Blunt) offers him a stay at their remote family cabin for some rest and recuperation. Unbeknownst to them, Iris' sister Hannah (Rosemarie DeWitt) has already taken up occupancy of the cabin to heal from a recent break-up. Jack and Hannah get drunk and end up spending the night together. When Iris arrives the next morning, things get very awkward.
This is a fresh and unique tale, all of the characters are clearly flawed and so desperate to be found. The cast are interacting in realistic and natural ways with each other, which makes the whole movie feel unforced and believable; I was unexpectedly and truly impressed, Your Sister's Sister is a winner.
FINAL SAY: Sometimes having a sister is utterly shit-house.

MIDNIGHT IN PARIS
Release Date: 2011
Rating: PG
Running Time: 94 mins
Written and directed by Woody Allen, this romance/fantasy movie is set on the magical streets of Paris and tells the tale of a man that finds inspiration through a series of unexpected time travel events.
Whilst vacationing in Paris with his future in laws and fiance Inez (Rachel McAdams), Gil (Owen Wilson) stumbles on a secret side of Paris that he discovers when walking alone at midnight. Gil finds that he can be transported back in time, to Paris in the 1920's, and begins to traverse between his own time and the past; gaining both deeper insight and greater personal confusion along the way.
This is an intriguing tale, with two love interest stories playing out simultaneously, each one building and losing momentum as the character Gil finds himself swept further away by the past. Owen Wilson is fabulous as Gil, and I think that this is the best acting that I have seen from him so far. He is clearly very well supported by an all star ensemble cast that boasts the likes of Kathy Bates, Marion Cotillard, Tom Hiddleston and Adrien Brody; and the whole thing plays out with a magical energy that made me long to visit Paris again.
FINAL SAY: That's what the present is. It's a little unsatisfying because life is unsatisfying.

TAKE THIS WALTZ
Release Date: 2011
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 116 mins
Directed by Sarah Polley, this romance drama is about infidelity and broken relationships. By examining the hum drum existence of an all too comfortable domestic relationship, we see how temptations can lead people astray.
Margot (Michelle Williams) is a freelance writer who lives in a cosy house with her husband of five years, Lou (Seth Rogen). Margot begins an affair with a handsome rickshaw driver named Daniel (Luke Kirby), who lives across the street from them, demonstrating that she is unfulfilled in her married life, but will life with Daniel be any more fulfilling?
Take This Waltz is a thought provoking film about the comforts of predictability set against the lure of spontaneity. The characters and interludes feel real and all of the emotions seem unforced, which is something that I really enjoyed. It is one of the best films about infidelity that I have encountered so far.

THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT
Release Date: 2010
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 106 mins
An all star cast make this undertaking seem effortless. Directed by Lisa Cholodenko, The Kids Are Alright was a hit at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, won two Golden Globes and was nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, and it is easy to see why, this is high quality drama with a strong cast and an interesting story line.
Two teenagers (Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson) that are being raised by their lesbian mothers (Julianne Moore and Annette Bening) seek out their biological father (Mark Ruffalo) and introduce him into their family.
This is a great look at non-conventional relationships and the complications that they carry. The cast are incredibly good together and the drama is realistic and interesting. Mark Ruffalo steals some hard to catch limelight here, but essentially it is Annette Bening that holds all the cards with another flawless performance.

Running Time: 112 mins
Named after the Tom Waits album and written and directed by Derek Cianfrance, Blue Valentine is an emotionally charged and deeply intimate look into the relationship milestones of a couple that are trying to navigate the pitfalls and dramatics of their rocky marriage. Michelle Williams was nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award for her incredible performance and Derek Cianfrance won The Most Promising Film Makers Award at The Chicago Film Critics Association Awards in 2010.
Dean (Ryan Gosling) and Cindy (Michelle Williams) meet and fall in love at a young age. When Cindy discovers that she is pregnant to her ex-boyfriend, the hard decisions begin, setting them both up for years of turbulence and difficulty. Their relationship is explored through a series of past and present timelines that depict the high and the lows of their time together.
This is a heartbreaking love story, both the falling in love and the falling apart are really well depicted and at times it is just harrowing to watch. The performances are incredibly solid and deeply convincing, leaving you with the feeling that you have just witnessed something beautiful and completely tragic in every way.

500 DAYS OF SUMMER
Release Date: 2009
Rating: M
Running Time: 95 mins
Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Tom, a man looking for love when he meets Summer (Zooey Deschanel), a girl who doesn't believe in true love. A slightly corny plot line, but overall I think that Marc Webb did a decent job in trying to explore the complications and baggage that people bring to relationships.
This movie is far more interested in exploring feelings and expectations of love than actually being about love, if that makes any sense. The couple are ridiculously good looking, not a blemish to be seen anywhere, and their super Indy dress sense and at times seemingly purposeless off-beat behaviour is a bit clique, but all that aside, this film has a voice and for a romance movie it is more than tolerable.
FINAL SAY: There's no such thing as love, it's fantasy.

BRIGHT STAR
Release Date: 2009
Rating: M
Running Time: 120 mins
A historical drama romance based on the last three years of the life of English poet John Keats and his romantic relationship to Fanny Brawne. Directed by Jane Campion, this may well be one of the most beautifully realised romance films of all time. Bright Star is darling with a capital D, in all respects, and I absolutely fell in love with this tale just as deeply as the John and Fanny fell for each other.
In 1818 Hampstead, a lovely seamstress and fashion designer named Fanny Brawne (Abbie Cornish) is introduced to a poor poet named John Keats (Ben Whishaw) through their mutual acquaintance poet Charles Brown. Over the changing seasons, Fanny and Keats fall deeply in love with each other, continuously exchanging notes, poetry and tokens of love. However circumstances continue to make it increasingly difficult for them to be together and they are reluctantly forced to be apart.
This movie is absolutely gorgeous in every way. The poetry, the costuming, the beautiful sprawling landscapes, the adorable characters, it is the most delightful period romance and if you are a lover of poetry then you are in for a real treat.
Whishaw and Cornish make the most delightful and convincing onscreen couple. The love that Fanny Brawne and John Keats shared was truly the stuff of dreams and fantasy, but it makes for the most whimsical and magical romance movie ever. There is so much to love here, Bright Star is an absolute must see period romance.
FINAL SAY: Poetry soothes and emboldens the soul to accept the mystery.

THE READER
Release Date: 2008
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 124 mins
An engrossing adaption of the 1995 semi-autobiographical novel by Bernhard Schlink, The Reader had audiences polarized with its controversial war-romance tale involving a teenage boy and an older woman. Kate Winslet won The Best Actress Award at the Academy Awards for her incredible portrayal of Hanna Schmitz, a woman with many secrets.
Nearly a full decade after his affair with a much older woman ended mysteriously, Michel Berg (Ralph Fiennes) who is now a middle aged barrister, re-encounters his lost lover as she defends herself on the stands of a war-crime trial.
I was riveted by the moral dilemmas that were constantly being generated throughout this movie, this is really intriguing and challenging story telling. The narrative is held together superbly by Fiennes and Winslet, who are just fabulous together, and although this is a love story, it is also so much more than that.

THE BROTHERS BLOOM
Release Date: 2008
Rating: M
Running Time: 114 mins
Probably not really a romance film in essence, but this movie certainly does have romantic undertones, and even though they may be conceived in the most unconventional of ways, they are there nonetheless. Written and directed by Rian Johnson, this quirky caper movie impressed me with it's offbeat perspective and exceptionally endearing character Penelope Stamp, who is played perfectly by the lovely Rachel Weisz.
The Brothers Bloom (Mark Ruffalo and Adrien Brody) are two of the world's most successful con artists. With the assistance of their mostly silent explosives expert Bang Bang (Rinko Kikuchi) they decide to try and swindle Penelope Stamp, a wealthy and solitary heiress, that proves to have a few unusual talents of her own.
There are loads of plot twists, it's truly on of those 'who's conning who' types of movies, and although it does flounder a bit towards the end, I still found it really entertaining and sweetly amusing.
FINAL SAY: The trick to not feeling cheated is to learn how to cheat.

Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 96 mins
A romance-drama, written and directed by Woody Allen. Shot in Barcelona, Spain and premiering at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival, Vicky Cristina Barcelona gained critical acclaim and landed Penelope Cruz both the Academy Award and the BAFTA for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
The story focuses on two American friends, Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlett Johansson), who are spending their summer in Barcelona. Whilst there, they encounter an artist named Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem) who is attracted to both of the women, but still has a rather unconventional relationship with his mentally and emotionally unstable ex-wife Maria-Elena (Penelope Cruz).
This film is a bizarre love triangle on overload, the people are all ridiculously gorgeous and the strange love dynamics are on overload. However, for all of it's flaws, I cannot deny that I really enjoyed it. The beautiful locations, the impossibly beautiful characters, the passionate interludes and the stand out performance from Cruz, it really worked for me. It's hard to say if I was longing for a Juan Antonio experience or a Spanish Summer after viewing this film, but either way, I was seduced, so it's a winner for me.
FINAL SAY: Only unfulfilled love can be romantic.

NICK AND NORAH'S INFINITE PLAYLIST
Release Date: 2008
Rating: M
Running Time: 90 mins
A sweet coming of age romantic comedy directed by Peter Sollett, written by Lorene Scafaria and based on the novel of the same name by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan. With just the right speckling of humour and drama, this romance really hit an unexpected high note for me.
Nick (Michael Cera) is a high school student and member of the Queercore band The Jerk Offs. He becomes involved with college bound Norah (Kat Dennings), a friend of his own bitchy ex-girlfriend Tris when she asks him to pose as her boyfriend for a few minutes in an attempt to make her own ex-boyfriend jealous. Soon the two are bonding over playlist music and inventing new ways to avoid their troubled pasts and friends.
Hardly a revelation in script writing or unique plot lines, however in spite of all of that there is still something genuinely sweet about this film that I really enjoyed. And besides, any movie that brings people together over a mutual love of music is always going to be a winner for me.
FINAL SAY: If anyone is getting raped in that van, it'll be a guy.

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
Release Date: 2008
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 120 mins
Filmed and set in India, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Simon Beaufoy, Slumdog Millionaire was a sleeper hit, universally adored by audiences for its interesting plot, lively soundtrack and touching sentiments. Slumdog Millionaire went on to sweep the Academy Awards, winning Best Picture and Best Director, and also had great success at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes and Critic's Choice Awards, quickly becoming the must see movie of 2009.
Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) is a participant on an Indian version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? Each question links Jamal back to an event in his life, which is vividly recalled for us before he answers each question. As Jamal gets closer and closer to becoming a millionaire, and suspicions arise that he is cheating due to his amazing ability to answer even the most obscure questions, it becomes apparent that his reasons for being on the program are mainly linked to the long lost love of his life.
This is an exhilarating movie with a wonderful plot line and a lot of heart. There is so much inspiration to be gleaned from Jamal's tale of hardship and endurance, it was hardly surprising that this movie won a place in so many hearts, it won a place in my own as well. You'll laugh, you'll cry and by the end of it you'll want to go to a Bollywood dance lesson, there is nothing like it, it's a must see for sure.
FINAL SAY: I'll wait for you at the train station every day at five.

ATONEMENT
Release Date: 2007
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 123 mins
A romance/war drama, based on Ian McEwan's popular 2001 novel of the same name. Director Joe Wright became the youngest director to open at the 64th Venice International Film Festival at the age of 35 with Atonement, and he enjoyed a lot of notoriety and attention for his saga that outlines a crime and it's consequences over six decades.
Filled with jealousy and malice, young Briony Tallis (Saoirse Ronan) hatches a story to keep her older sister Cecilia (Keira Knightley) away from the an old family friend and army private named Robbie Turner(James McAvoy). Her deception changes the course of several lives and when war breaks out in Britain, it seems an impossibility that the two lovers will ever reunite.
This is truly a tale of enduring love, immensely sad and overflowing with unrequited passions. The directing here is on point, the scenes are lush and grandiose, and the actors are so good that they practically outshine the script. I cannot deny that I enjoyed it, for a period romance it was up there for me, it had enough intrigue to keep me interested and there were plenty of beautiful things to look at as well, especially James McAvoy who looks amazing in this.

CANDY
Release Date: 2006
Rating: R 18+
Running Time: 116 mins
An Australian romance drama, adapted from Luke Davies's novel Candy: A Novel of Love and Addiction, which pretty much sums up the entire film in a few simple words.
A poet named Dan (Heath Ledger) falls in love with an art student named Candy (Abbie Cornish) and together they begin an intense romance based on their love of all things bohemian and heroin related. As the two fall deeper in love and further into their drug addictions, things get messy and complicated, and they soon realise that getting straight is the only way that they will able to sort out their problems; but getting clean is never an easy thing to do.
This is a harrowing love story about two beautiful people falling beautifully in love and then having drugs fuck it all up. It is difficult to watch Dan and Candy struggle through their altered states of oblivion, self destruction and despair, and although their love is sweet, their choices are terrible and the consequences are horrific.
FINAL SAY: A druggie love story.

STRANGER THAN FICTION
Release Date: 2006
Rating: M
Running Time: 113 mins
A fantasy romance tale, directed by Marc Forster and written by Zach Helm (better known for his work on Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium) that offers a sweet and entertaining look into the lives of ordinary everyday people with a whimsical and quirky backdrop.
Harold Crick, an insanely regimented IRS agent, has his predictable life turned upside down when he begins to hear an internal voice that is narrating the events of his life as they occur. When he falls for Ana, the baker that he has been assigned to audit, things rapidly get even more out of hand for Harold.
Will Ferrell delivers one of his best ever performances as Harold, and Maggie Gyllenhaal offers another believable quirky indie-chick performance. It is actually the incredible cast that really brings this film to life; Emma Thompson, Dustin Hoffman, Queen Latifah and Tom Hulce all bring levity to the story; which although isn't life changing, is intelligent, charming and quite good fun.

BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
Release Date: 2005
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 134 mins
Directed by Ang Lee and based on the short story of the same name by Annie Proulx, Brokeback Mountain made waves when it was released, for being the first gay western-romance to grace the silver screen. However, it was universally praised by critics for it's complex and emotional depiction of a relationship between two men, spanning over 20 years in the American West. After taking home a massive amount of awards, but controversially not getting the Best Picture Academy Award at the 78th Academy Awards, Brokeback Mountain soon became the must see movie of the year.
In 1963, a rodeo cowboy (Jake Gyllenhaal) and a ranch hand (Heath Ledger) begin a forbidden affair whilst sheep herding out on Brokeback Mountain. Eventually, they both marry women, but secretly continue their sporadic affair for 20 years.
This is one of the most tragic love stories that I have ever seen, I was so deeply moved by this film, it has always stuck with me as one of the best romance movies of all time. Gyllenhaal and Ledger are incredible as the cowboy lovers, desperately trying to deny and cover up their strong affections for each other, and Anne Hathaway and Michelle Williams do a fine job of portraying the wives of these torn individuals. It's heartbreaking and unforgettable, a definite must see.

THE NOTEBOOK
Release Date: 2004
Rating: PG
Running Time: 123 mins
This grand and epic love story stole the hearts of thousands, and saw women all over the world falling madly in love with Ryan Gosling. Directed by Nick Cassavetes and based on the 1996 novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks, this is a lifelong romance story about a couple who meet and fall in love in the 1940's.
In South Carolina, Noah, a mill worker, falls for Allie, a local rich girl, and the two begin a forbidden romance. When Noah goes to war, Allie's relieved mother thinks that the love affair has ended, however, when Noah returns some years later it is clear that the love that they shared was enduring.
This is one of those sweeping saga types of romances where the director has attempted to be esoteric about the outcomes, but seriously, the writing is on the wall from the get go. I can't say that I really loved this movie, but it did seem to pull at people's heartstrings and the characters are actually quite likable. I'm not sure if this movie would've been as successful without Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams playing the lead roles, but aside from that, if you are in the mood for something completely sentimental, then look no further.

FINDING NEVERLAND
Release Date: 2004
Rating: PG
Running Time: 106 mins
A semi-biographical film directed by Marc Forster, about the playwright J. M. Barrie and his relationship with the family that inspired him to create Peter Pan. The film was nominated for several Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor for Johnny Depp, and won the Academy Award for Best Musical Score.
Barrie's (Depp) platonic relationship with widowed Sylvia (Winslet) and her four sons, inspires him to write a play about a group of boys that never want to grow old, Peter Pan. The play becomes a success and bonds the family with Barrie in the most magical and whimsical of ways.
This is a enchanting movie, the relationships are sweet, enduring and respectful, with Depp and Winslet showcasing all of their talent and charm. And, even though the relationship is not completely romantic, the vibe of the film certainly is. I adored the characters and was swept away by the simple grace and beauty of this film, it's quite a tearjerker.

ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND
Release Date: 2004
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 108 mins
This is my favourite romance movie of all time. Crossing into the sci-fi genre and running with two story lines simultaneously, this movie directed by Michel Gondry is guaranteed to tug at your heart strings.
The script was penned by Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich and Adaptation) making the dialogue fresh and intelligent and the story line original in every way.
Joel and Clementine are struggling in their relationship and decide to have a procedure that will erase each other from their memories. However, in trying to lose each other, they discover the true nature of what they had in the first place.
This was a break out role for Jim Carrey proving to the world that he is not merely a slapstick comedy actor, and Kate Winslet is captivating as ever along side of him. A star-studded ensemble fill all of the supporting roles including Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo and Elijah Wood.

UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN
Release Date: 2003
Rating: M
Running Time: 113 mins
If you are excited by the idea of purchasing some ramshackle villa in the middle of nowhere to renovate, then you are going to love this film. Under the Tuscan Sun is speaking a lot more about love than the critics gave it credit for, and I really enjoyed it, I think it was an uplifting and inspirational story that women will really respond to.
Author Frances Mayes (Diane Ladd) discovers that her husband has been having an affair and a messy divorce ensues. Her best friend (Sandra Oh) encourages her to take a trip to Italy to get away from her woes, and she ends up falling in love with Tuscany and purchases a run down villa to renovate.
This is a story about growth and renewal, speckled with romantic and platonic interludes that make it both amusing and touching. Told from the view point of a recent divorcee, there is quite a powerful message here about the need to rediscover your identity and overcome your baggage to find the true meaning of self and love.

LOVE ACTUALLY
Release Date: 2003
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 135 mins
Finally a funny and intelligent Christmas themed movie! Thank God for director Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Bridget Jones and About Time) for giving us this clever little romp through the silly season in England, where all things celebratory and love orientated are put into overdrive.
The story begins five weeks before Christmas and is played out by weekly countdown. We follow nine intertwining stories that examine the complexities of the one emotion that connects us all, love; during the one season that no-one can escape - Christmas.
A stellar ensemble cast pull this all together perfectly; Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Emma Thomson, Martin Freeman, Keira Knightly, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rowan Atkinson, Alan Rickman and my favourite Bill Nighy all shine brightly here. The soundtrack is killer, the interactions between the characters are delightful and there is at least one relatable story here for everyone. One of the best modern Christmas films of our time for sure.

Release Date: 2003
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 101 mins
Sofia Coppola has a wonderful eye for portraying men as kind, gentle and genuinely responsible and reliable. If only we got more of that and less of the misogynistic bullshit that we are constantly fed about men in cinema.
This is a beautiful film about being away from home, suffering from culture clash and finding comfort in strangers.
The characters are extremely believable and wonderfully portrayed by Scarlett Johansson as the lonely young wife and Bill Murray as the faded movie star. Their growing friendship and affection for each other is executed with taste and delight, its almost magical in a sense as they unfold with candid honesty about their thoughts on marriage and life.

THE GOOD GIRL
Release Date: 2002
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 93 mins
This was the movie that changed my mind about Jennifer Aniston, The Good Girl moved her away from the 'Rachel in Friends' role that I had pigeon-holed her into and for the first time I saw her as a reputable actor with talent. To be honest this movie surprised me all round, because I was not expecting its fresh, original and awkwardly charming script and cast.
Justine (Aniston) is a bored, thirty year old check-out chick at the Retail Rodeo in small town Texas. Being married to her long term, pot smoking partner Phil (John C. Reilly) has put Justine in a rut, and that's when she meets Holden (Jake Gyllenhaal). Holden is a young and unusual boy that falls madly in love with Justine, and before long the two are involved in a messy affair that threatens Justine reliable good girl image.
This film presented a great moral conundrum about loyalty and really living the life that you want. It's a real tangle of emotional obligation and the cast perfectly delivers all of the anguish and turmoil with poignancy. A fabulous support cast that includes Zooey Deschanel and Tim Blake Nelson round out the bill and the overall effect is lingering.
FINAL SAY: You do get me, you just don't wanna get me because I'm too intensified for you.

PUNCH DRUNK LOVE
Release Date: 2002
Rating: M
Running Time: 95 mins
An offbeat romance, written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson that showcases Adam Sandler's ability to really act, which sets this apart from any of his other material. The story is put together in an art house kind of a way, and plays out like a bit of an ongoing car crash, in other words, terrible things are continually occurring which pushes the main characters along in the most unpredictable of ways.
Barry Egan (Sandler) is a lonely supply salesman with problems. Torn between his overbearing sisters, his anger issues and his impulsive quirks, his life is one big cacophony of noise and agitation. That is until he meets Lena, a calm amidst the calamity and a possible solution to all of his problems.
There is a lot of good stuff going on here, the script is sharp and witty, the play on the auditory levels of the movie had a real impact on me, and I adored the darling budding romance between the main characters Barry and Lena, who are portrayed perfectly by Adam Sandler and Emily Watson. I found this to be an incredibly sweet and poignant tale about finding your purpose in someone else, and accepting people flaws and all, because it's so damn good to be in love.
FINAL SAY: I have a love in my life. It makes me stronger than anything you can imagine.

BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY
Release Date: 2001
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 97 mins
The movie that had every woman feeling better about her body, only to be followed up shortly by Renee Zellweger's transformation from regular person to freak show of epic proportions. Unfortunate turn of events really, but let's not let that ruin the charm of Bridget Jones's Diary, which is a much happier tale overall.
Poor Bridget is struggling with her age, weight, job, lack of a man and many imperfections. She starts to keep a diary as part of her New Year's Resolution to take control of her life. In her diary she recounts the events of her affair with her boss, her nights out with her friends, her family gatherings and her unwanted encounters with the annoying Mark Darcy. Could any of it lead Bridget closer to what she is looking for?
This is a feel good chick-flick if ever there was one, a perfect choice for a girls night in and a complete no-brainer from start to end. It's simple, it's sweet and it's charming in a frothy kind of way, what more could you want from a romance story?
FINAL SAY: Bridget Jones, wanton sex goddess, with a very bad man between her thighs...

CHOCOLAT
Release Date: 2000
Rating: M
Running Time: 121 mins
Lasse Hallstrom, the director that brought us What's eating Gilbert Grape and The Cider House Rules, hits another very sweet note with Chocolat.
Set in the mid 50's in a small, provincial and vigorously religious village in France; we meet Vianne and her daughter Anouk. The single mother literally blows into town one night bringing with her an irresistible chocolate recipe and her own kind of magic that soon turns the town upside down. When the roving river people arrive, Vianne also finds herself tangling with new feelings for the musical traveller Roux. Will Vianne's love of her new chocolat shop and Roux be enough to keep her from uprooting young Anouk again?
I just adored the mystery and fairy tale elements of this movie. Juliette Binoche is utterly enchanting, Johnny Depp is bringing all of his sex appeal and exceptionally strong female support is offered from the likes of Lena Olin, Judi Dench and Carrie-Ann Moss. Definitely one of my fave romance movies of all time and lots of fun to watch.
FINAL SAY: Delicious and delightful.

10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU
Release Date: 1999
Rating: M
Running Time: 97 mins
A young Heath Ledger had girls hearts pounding with his portrayal of the outcast boy at school, Patrick. Equally, Julia Styles terrified boys everywhere with her portrayal of Kat, a fast talking and abrasive teen that will take no shit from anyone. When scheming Cameron (Joseph Gordon -Levitt) falls for Kat's main stream and younger sister Bianca, he must first find someone to date Kat so that her father will let Bianca also date. He targets Patrick in attempt to bring the two 'undateables' together.
10 things I Hate About You is a modernization of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, portraying the Indy feminist character Kat as the 'shrew'. It's universal popularity launched the careers of Styles, Ledger and Gordon-Levitt, and even if you're not into teen romance movies, there is a lot to enjoy here. The soundtrack is fabulous, the actors are showing why they went on to bigger things and the story line is entertaining and amusing.
FINAL SAY: Tempestuous? "Heinous Bitch" is the term most often used.

PLEASANTVILLE
Release Date: 1998
Rating: M
Running Time: 124 mins
I can't honestly say that this is a romance movie, because it isn't, but there is a love story contained within the storyline, so I'm going with it. Directed by Gary Ross, this fantasy/drama set in the 1950's is enchanting from start to end; I just adored this film. I found it visually pleasing and highly entertaining, the cast is a fantastic blend of veteran actors and young upcoming stars, and there is a good mix of genres all thrown together in an amusing and clever way.
David (Tobey Maguire) loves to watch his favourite TV program Pleasantville, which is a black and white 1950's soap opera about a time when things were simpler. After a strange repair man fixes their TV remote, David and his promiscuous sister Jennifer (Reese Witherspoon) find themselves transported to Pleasantville, a place that is not only colourless but also a place that is harbouring many hidden prejudices and a strong demand for conformity. As David and Jennifer's influences start to be felt in Pleasantville, colours begin to appear, making some people excited and others fearful.
The introduction of colour is just magical in this film, it's easily the best black and white to colour transition movie that I have ever seen. The cast is stellar, in particular, Joan Allen, William H. Macy and Jeff Daniels, but in truth everyone is really bringing their best here. Pleasantville is a must see cinematic experience and shouldn't be missed.
FINAL SAY: Must be awfully lucky to see colours like that.

CHASING AMY
Release Date: 1997
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 113 mins
The movie that 'Silent Bob' broke his silence for. It could be seen as a bit dated these days, but when it was released, Chasing Amy had a fresh voice about the jealousies and insecurities that ruin good relationships. Written and directed by Kevin Smith (Silent Bob), Chasing Amy won two Independent Spirit Awards in 1998 and was generally received with favourable critic reviews.
Comic book authors Banky (Jason Lee) and Holden (Ben Affleck) have been best buddies for over 20 years, but the arrival of a high spirited lesbian named Alyssa Jones (Joey Lauren Adams) threatens their friendship when Holden falls for her. Holden finds that his feelings are put to test, not only by Banky who desperately wants Alyssa gone, but also by Alyssa's checkered and promiscuous past.
This a great story about young people attempting to find themselves whilst trying to deal with their baggage and hang ups. I really enjoyed this movie because love does come in all kinds of packages, and some of them aren't very neat or pretty.
FINAL SAY: So, I've spent every day since then chasing Amy.

AS GOOD AS IT GETS
Release Date: 1997
Rating: M
Running Time: 139 mins
Directed by James L. Brooks, As Good As It Gets saw Helen Hunt and Jack Nicholson win both the Best Actor and Best Actress Awards respectively at the Oscars, something that hadn't been achieved since 1991 with The Silence of the Lambs. Still ranking in at 141st on Empire magazine's "The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time" list, As Good As It Gets is a rare romance movie that will certainly stand the test of time.
Over a few interesting days, a misanthropic, racist, obsessive-compulsive novelist named Melvin Udall (Nicholson) has his life turned upside down. Already stretched after reluctantly taking on the responsibility of his gay neighbour's dog (Greg Kinnear) after he was hospitalized, Melvin gets pushed over the edge when his favourite waitress (Helen Hunt) doesn't turn up for her shift due to her extremely ill child. Melvin finds that by trying to correct the small hiccups in his life, he actually becomes more involved in the lives of others.
Jack Nicholson demonstrates why he keeps getting so many amazing movie roles, it's because he damn well deserves them! There is no-one in the world that could pull off such an asshole of a character like Melvin Udall with as much charisma and flair as Jack did. This is truly one of the most enjoyable romances that I have ever seen in my life, the performance are fantastic, the dialogue is witty and interesting and it just succeeds in so many ways, this is definitely one to place onto your must see list.

A LIFE LESS ORDINARY
Release Date: 1997
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 103 mins
A black comedy/romance directed by Danny Boyle and written by John Hodge, with a quirky slant towards the intervention of otherworldly beings when it comes to matters of the heart.
The archangel Gabriel has threatened to cast two angels from heaven if their next love assignment fails. Desperate for success, angels O'Reilly (Holly Hunter) and Jackson (Delroy Lindo) will stop at nothing to get the unlikely pairing of a spoiled rich girl (Cameron Diaz) and a cleaner (Ewan McGregor) to fall madly in love.
This is a pretty wacky romance story, and judging by it's reviews, that whimsy didn't translate to everyone. I however thought that this was a really enjoyable watch, Diaz was tolerable and McGregor was haphazardly charming and they believably bounced off each other on screen. Holly Hunter has always been a favourite of mine, and I just adored her as the relentless and at times ruthless angel, O'Reilly.
A Life Less Ordinary also has a fantastic soundtrack that just adds a little more icing to the cake. Certainly not your average romance story, but who wants average anyway? Watch with an open mind.

ROMEO + JULIET
Release Date: 1996
Rating: M
Running Time: 120 mins
This modern adaptation of Shakespeare's classic play Romeo and Juliet is the most pleasing of the many attempts that have been made. Directed by Baz Luhrmann, Romeo + Juliet was his second film in The Red Curtain Trilogy, and Luhrmann shot to international fame off the back off this film, winning a lot of critic attention and awards for his efforts.
Everyone knows the story, it's as old as time. Two rival gangs, the Capulets and the Montagues, are at odds, and Romeo and Juliet throw a spanner in the works when they fall madly in love despite the fact that their families forbid it. Juliet is already promised to Paris making things even worse, and the two seem to be doomed from start to end.
This is the quintessential romance-tragedy, passions are running high and there is a lot at stake in the name of love. But Luhrmann's portrayal is so much more than just another Shakespearean adaptation, he has gone to painstaking efforts to keep the story fresh and alive. He has left all of the original dialect in, adding stark contrast to his work, and pushing his talented cast to really deliver. The soundtrack is a fabulous mix of funky and alternative songs which certainly adds a lot to the overall feel of the movie.
Girls everywhere were falling head over heels for Leonardo DiCaprio's powerful performance of Romeo, and Claire Danes is painfully beautiful as Juliet. However, my favourites were John Leguizamo as Tybalt and Harold Perrineau as Mercutio who both added some much needed depth and humour. It's a really well put together piece and it's worthy of a least one viewing in everyone's lifetime.
FINAL SAY: Two households, both alike in dignity.

FRENCH KISS
Release Date: 1995
Rating: M
Running Time: 111 mins
I blame Kevin Kline for liking this film, ever since A Fish Called Wanda I have had a soft spot for him, and I honestly really enjoyed his somewhat questionable portrayal of an overly confident, small time Parisian crook in French Kiss.
Kate's (Meg Ryan) insanely fastidious lifestyle has caused her fiance to stray and fall in love with a young Parisian woman. Kate battles her fear of flying, cheese and second-hand smoke to go to France and confront him. On the plane she meets a jewelry thief named Luc (Kevin Kline) who smuggles a necklace and grape vine into her luggage to get them through customs. After Kate's bag is stolen, Luc becomes entangled in her life and must assist her in getting her fiance back in order to hang around until her bag shows up.
This is a charming little rom-com, made long before Meg Ryan turned in the joker-faced freak that she is now and although the plot is hardly a revelation in cinema, there is a sweet simplicity to French Kiss that I enjoyed. Any movie that features the 'City of Lights' is going to win me over anyway, so I was bound to like it, good or bad.

BEFORE SUNRISE, BEFORE SUNSET AND BEFORE MIDNIGHT (TRILOGY)
Release Date: 1995, 2004 and 2013
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 294 mins (total)
Filmed with a nine year hiatus between each movie, this trilogy documents the lives of Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy), a couple that meet in Before Sunrise, reunite in Before Sunset and adapt to a long term relationship in the third and final instalment, Before Midnight.
This is beautifully written material, skillfully realised by Richard Linklater and perfectly delivered by Hawke and Delpy. There is very little plot to these films, they are basically an exploration of the conversations and opinions of the two protagonists as they wash over each other and try to understand one another.
Watching the same actors reunite every nine years is a treat and they really do physically and emotionally evolve with each instalment. This trilogy almost feels voyeuristic in the way that you engage with the characters in their private spaces, observing and over hearing their conversations and getting an intimate depiction of the dynamics of their lives.
The scenery is an added bonus in these movies; the first takes place in Vienna, the second in France and the third is in Greece, each country adding another layer of subtle beauty to this extremely good examination of developing relationships.

LEGENDS OF THE FALL
Release Date: 1994
Rating: M
Running Time: 133 mins
With a heartbreakingly gorgeous Brad Pitt in the lead, this epic tale of love, betrayal and sinful trysts will certainly enthral you. Based on the 1979 novella of the same name and directed by Edward Zwick, Pitt isn't the only thing looking amazing here because Legends of the Fall won the Best Cinematography Academy Award for its stunning visuals.
An epic western saga, set in the 1900's, Legends of the Fall is about a beautiful woman from back East and the three sons of a Montana rancher who loved her and fought for her; set against the backdrop World War One.
The cast is credible to say the least with Julia Ormond playing the love interest Susannah, Aidan Quinn, Brad Pitt and Henry Thomas playing the three sons and Anthony Hopkins portraying the family matriarch Ludlow.
Sure it all plays out in a rather melodramatic fashion and there are a lot over the top emotions and obsessive behaviours, however for a romantic drama there a lot of other interesting things going here as well, particularly the historical significance of the US government's appalling treatment of the native Americans and the harrowing toll that WW1 had upon communities.
FINAL SAY: Every warrior hopes a good death will find him.

GROUNDHOG DAY
Release Date: 1993
Rating: PG
Running Time: 101 mins
I know that this film probably belongs in the comedy section, but the extreme lengths that Bill Murray goes to in order to win Andie MacDowell's heart in this film just made me compelled to place it into the romance genre.
An arrogant weatherman (Murray) is assigned the job of covering the annual Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. He becomes stuck in a time loop and begins repeating the same day over and over again, soon realising that he is going to have to make the best of it when even suicide attempts fail to release him from his 'Groundhog Day' hell.
Directed by Harold Ramis, this is a clever and enjoyable rom-com, showcasing all of Murray's talents and delivering just the right amount of humour to make it a winner.

BENNY AND JOON
Release Date: 1993
Rating: PG
Running Time: 98 mins
When two artistic eccentrics called Sam and Juniper meet and fall in love, things are bound to get a little weird. Johnny Depp (Sam) takes the opportunity to showcases his remarkable ability to pull off physical comedy through a series of routines that are reminiscent of silent greats Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, giving the movie a quirky and silly edge.
But this movie is about so much more than comedy, it's about unconditional love and finding someone that makes you feel like life is worth is living. Due to the fact that Juniper (or Joon) is actually mentally ill, there are some bigger factors at play here, and a lot of facets of enduring love are explored through Joon's illness.
This is a sweet tale, a worthy watch and a lovely little slice of romance with a bit of edge that the whole family can enjoy.

FINAL SAY: Love blooms in even the most unconventional places.

EDWARD SCISSORHANDS
Release Date: 1990
Rating: M
Running Time: 105 mins
Tim Burton brings together a mixed bag of romance and tragedy in Edward Scissorhands. This fairy tale like story has extreme characters and is set in a cookie cutter middle-class community in America, showcasing Burton's love of the unusual and sympathy for the underdog.
Edward (Johnny Depp) is hidden away from society by his recluse inventor father (Vincent Price). When he dies, he leaves Edward to fend for himself in an 'unfinished' state. A local Avon lady (Dianne Wiest) discovers him and takes pity on him, encouraging Edward to come and live in their family home. Edward tries to assimilate and soon falls for his host's daughter (Winona Ryder); but not everyone in the town is willing to embrace Edward's unusual appearance and rather unorthodox ways.
This is a charming and moving movie, it's deeply magical quality is sure to enchant viewers for years to come and certainly won a place in my heart.
FINAL SAY: The first cut is the deepest.

TRULY, MADLY, DEEPLY
Release Date: 1990
Rating: PG
Running Time: 106 mins
This fantasy romance, written and directed by Anthony Minghella, craps all over the movie Ghost when it comes to reunifying with lost loved ones. This odd, touching and quirky story about love beyond the grave, is an amusing and convincingly heartfelt watch.
Nina is stricken with grief when her boyfriend Jamie passes away. On the verge of agony and despair, Jamie reaches out to Nina from the other side, and the two have a wonderful reunification. However, Jamie's behaviours and his need to spend time with his new friends from the afterlife, begin to annoy Nina, and she starts to pull away from him.
There is something so beautiful about the character of Jamie, who clearly comes back to comfort Nina, but to also point out all of the flaws in their relationship, so that she can move on with her life. I was deeply moved by this movie and it's selfless storyline.
Alan Rickman is dryly funny as Jamie and Juliet Stevenson is energetically charming as Nina, and the pair have a good and conceivable chemistry on screen, making the film sweet without being sickly.
FINAL SAY: The capacity that people have to love...Where does it go?

SHIRLEY VALENTINE
Release Date: 1989
Rating: MA 15+
Running Time: 108 mins
After dreaming of going to Greece since I was 12, this movie really struck a chord for me, and not just because of it's beautiful depictions of a greek island lifestyle but also because of the strong independent charm of Shirley Valentine.
Shirley Valentine is a tale about a woman that is just plain fed up with the monotony and predictability of her life, her family take her for granted and she has become sad and drab. So she packs up her bags and heads to Greece for a holiday, in an attempt to find some sun, sea and solution to her woes.
Is there any romance? Well a little, but this film is mostly focused on falling in love with Greece and yourself. It is a movie about self empowerment and having the guts to step away from a life that is no longer offering you any happiness.
I adored the ballsy and yet clearly beaten down character of Shirley, portrayed perfectly by Pauline Collins, who not only really looked like a middle aged housewife but played her role of Shirley with great conviction, enough conviction to land herself a Best Actress BAFTA. This is a movie for all of those women out there that are sick of waiting for their families to treat them with the respect that they deserve; it is all about breaking free.
FINAL SAY: I'm not saying he's bad, my fella. He's just no bleedin' good!

DANGEROUS LIASONS
Release Date: 1988
Rating: M
Running Time: 119 mins
A period-romance drama, directed by Stephen Frears from a screenplay by Christopher Hampton, which was based on his 1985 play Les Liaisons dangereuses, itself adapted from the 1782 French novel of the same name by Pierre Choderlos de Lacios. Salacious, underhanded and vicious behaviours abound in this highly entertaining tale with a star-studded cast.
A scheming widow and her manipulative ex-lover; both of whom have questionable moral values due to their jaded royal lifestyles, make a terrible bet and then set about casually ruining the lives of others for sport.
Dastardly and immoral, it's hard to look away from this gorgeous, nasty and incredibly well cast movie. Boasting Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer, Keanu Reeves and Uma Thurman among its ranks, Dangerous Liaisons delivers completely, on the drama, the perversity and the powdered wigs!
In 1999, a modern adaption of this tale entitled Cruel Intentions was produced, starring a cast of attractive young stars like Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon and Selma Blair. It is practically the same film, without the period pomp, but for me the original version is the best version by far to see. I simply cannot deny that I love all of the incredible costuming and finery of pre-revolution Paris.
FINAL SAY: What is true of most men is doubly so of him.

16 CANDLES
Release Date: 1984
Rating: M
Running Time: 93 mins
This John Hughes 80's classic is right up there with the likes of The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Hughes films were a staple for me growing up, and the jokes and teen awkwardness still work well today. Basically, there's always enough headgear, leotards and floppy disks to fill an 80's convention and the soundtrack is always kicking, making them the perfect coming of age options for any generation.
Samantha Baker has just turned 16, however with her sisters wedding stealing all of the limelight, no-one even remembers. Smothered at home by an influx of extended family for the wedding and the horny exchange student Long Duk Dong, she turns her attentions to the high school dance. However, at school she is being pursued by a relentless geek whilst secretly lusting over the incredibly hunky Jake Ryan. Things are set into motion for a crazy 48 hours of mis-hap and hilarity as love finds a way against all odds in true Hughes style.
FINAL SAY: Craziest 16th ever.

ANNIE HALL
Release Date: 1977
Rating: M
Running Time: 93 mins
Winner of the 1978 Academy Award for Best Picture, Woody Allen's Annie Hall is in a league of it's own when it comes to rom-coms. With it's sharp blend of humour and poignant relationship philosophy, this is clearly Allen's most successful and dynamic movie, and after a recent viewing, I can assure you that it has not lost any of its punch 40+ years on.
A successful and neurotic comedian named Alvy Singer (Woody Allen) reflects on his relationship with a charming and ditzy performer named Annie Hall (Diane Keaton).
The role of Annie was actually written for Keaton, and she delivers it flawlessly, showcasing the performance of her career and earning herself the Academy Award for Best Actress. Woody Allen also snagged the Best Director and Original Screenplay Awards along side of Marshall Brickman for Annie Hall, as well as numerous other Golden Globes and BAFTA awards. Enough said really, this is most definitely a must see, classic, romance-comedy, so make the time to see it.
FINAL SAY: I guess we keep going through it because, uh, most of us... need the eggs.

MY FAIR LADY
Release Date: 1964
Rating: G
Running Time: 170 mins
A musical film adaptation based on George Bernard Shaw's stage play Pygmalion, My Fair Lady won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director, demonstrating everyone's love for a good musical back in the 1960's.
A misogynistic and stuck up professor named Henry Higgins takes on a bet that he can transform a Cockney street vendor named Eliza Doolittle into a lady. Naturally he succeeds, and she becomes adored by a local aristocrat that wishes to sweep her off her feet. Higgins struggles with his feelings when he realises that he too has grown fond of Eliza.
This is an interesting story and a charming movie, and although there is a very clear romance story, there is also an observable plot line about self empowerment and the separation of the classes. Unfortunately, the very talented Audrey Hepburn's abilities only stretch so far and what appears to be her belting out tunes, is actually the voice of Marni Nixon that was dubbed over all of Hepburn's tracks.
My Fair Lady is and always will be, one of the most enjoyable musicals of all time and is worth at least one viewing in everyone's lifetime.
